Anger management counseling can help to identify stressors and learn the steps to stay calm in the face of anger. The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

Living with anger management can cause difficulties in many aspects of a person's world. Personal, professional and community relationships are at risk if one struggles with anger issues. Tools to reduce anger management involve exploring the root of the anger and dissecting it to discern when, how and why certain anger triggers are activated. Once identifying triggers, we work on how the client can learn to channel the anger into a more productive direction be it via physical activity or other appropriate energy releases. There can also be a focus on mindfulness and meditation to help with the overwhelming anger impulses.

In terms of managing your anger, it is important to understand that anger is often the minds' way of protecting you, or of defending you from something. Often, people feel as if they have been a victim of something, and then they will act out in anger because they feel as if they need to protect themselves. If you understand why, it may be easier to get past the point of simply having outbursts.

Approaching anger from the neuroscience perspective involves knowing which parts of the brain are not controlling the anger reaction, or why excessive anger reactions occur in the first place. Brain mapping helps identify these problems, and direct modulation of the neurons involved can greatly improve the person's ability to hold onto reactions, and think through their alternatives.

I see lots of angry teenagers. They disrespect parents and teachers, punch holes in walls, say mean things to siblings, refuse to help out around the house, or are surly and sarcastic and make everyone walk on eggshells around them. Anger management works fine if the person wants to manage their anger, but most of the angry teens brought to my office have no interest in managing their anger—they want people to know they're angry because that's the only way they feel their message will be heard. I help these kids find other ways to express themselves, and help parents hear and appreciate the message—even while disagreeing with it—so that the "heat" leaves, allowing for genuine discussion.
