Sadly, I am seeing younger and younger children coming into therapy with eating disorders. I work with a family based model to help families learn the skills required to intervene to help children begin road to recovery. Many therapists specialize in working with young children--using play therapy, for example, and I admire the work that they do. But my own approach is to hypothesize that when a child is not doing well, the problem likely resides with the parents. Thus I coach the parents to be firm and consistent. But I also coach them to work together, if they can--since child problems, seen in the context of divorcing parents, for example, might actually be a solution in that the problem is the only thing that brings the parents together as they seek to deal with the child. So resolving the parents' issues often is the key. The child cannot be made (however unintentionally) responsible for family unity.
