Families have discovered that Long Island NY, with nearly 700 public schools, and several distinguished universities, such as the Long Island University and Hofstra University have a lot to offer up-and-coming young empire builders. And if a private school is something they're looking for, there are many private and parochial schools to choose from, such as Valley Stream Christian Academy, or Ebenezer Christian. Children of all ages, from pre-K to teenage can get solid, fulfilling educations. As everyone knows, though, education doesn't stop at school. Long Island Museum has an incredible display of horse-drawn carriages, some of which are more than 100 years old. This exhibition shows what carriages were really like---the variety and colors.1 It might have that car-crazy teenager re-thinking the whole thing.

Mental Health in Long Island

Residents of Long Island have access to 24-hour a day, seven-day a week emergency mental health services at the Long Island Crisis Center. Specializing in telephone-based and online crisis management, the agency provides free and anonymous assistance to anyone in need in Suffolk or Nassau Counties. Free intervention services are also available in person at the agency's clinic in Bellmore. Counselors on staff are highly trained and can assist individuals with issues related to any mental health concern. To receive services any time of day or night, call 516-679-1111.2

Various substance abuse prevention programs are available to Long Islanders through the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. The organization is dedicated to providing accurate, research-based information to groups of all ages in order to raise awareness of addiction and improve access to recovery services for the general public. Their Parent-Child Communication workshops help educate parents about how to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol. School-based programs seek to empower young people to resist peer pressure, make healthy decisions, and build resiliency among children whose families struggle with substance abuse. For additional details, call 516-747-2606.3

Physical illnesses can lead to mental health struggles for some people. Winthrop University Hospital provides several social-emotional groups for people who are undergoing treatment for cancer. Groups offer a safe place where peers can support one another as they get treatment, share feelings about their illness, and seek professional guidance from a trained social worker. Groups are free of charge and meet on a regular basis. Call 516-663-9062 to inquire about upcoming meetings.4

Current Education

The Long Island University School of Health Professions and Nursing offers a Social Work program for people interested in entering the human services field. Students in the program can concentrate on one of several areas, including gerontology, alcohol and substance abuse, and child and family welfare. Fieldwork is available in a variety of settings, from schools to homeless shelters to community mental health agencies, and provides students with real world and practical experiences that foster improved therapeutic skills. More detailed information about this program is available by calling 516-299-2000.5
