Yonkers New York is located in the southeastern most corner of the state, just north of Manhattan and bordering New York City and The Bronx. However, its big city appeal is not the only means of entertainment. The Yonkers Raceway is considered one of the city's landmarks and was first established in the 1899. After overcoming much adversity, such as lack of interest and fire code violations that forced the revocation of its racing license, the raceway today is now a popular destination. Not only is Yonkers Raceway a track for harness racing, it is also the video-lottery terminal, thus earning it the term racino (racing track and casino combined). For a more cultural adventure, the city's famous Hudson River Museum is a culturally and aesthetically enriching attraction. Although famed for its arts, the museum also houses exhibits that offer perspective into the area's history. The museum's own planetarium embarks in the opposite direction and introduces a show that allows its participants to journey half a century into the future. 1

Marriage and Family Mental Health in Yonkers

Fathers Count is a free parenting class offered by Family Services of Westchester. The program focuses specifically on fathers that have been absent from their child's life due to incarceration. The program seeks to help these men transition back to the family in a way that supports and enhances the emotional wellbeing of his children. Participants learn a host of skills, from financial literacy to strategies for managing anger to improving communication. Over the course of ten sessions, men work in group settings to practice their skills and give and receive support and guidance. To enroll in this program, call 914-964-6767 extension 126.2

Parents, grandparents, and others who serve as parents to young children can find many resources to build a stronger family at the Yonkers Resource Center. Among their many programs are support groups so parents can get together to talk about common challenges of raising a child. For those with very young children, the Early Childhood Support Group is a great way to learn about child development issues. There is also a group for Spanish-speaking caregivers. Westhab is a Yonkers non-profit agency dedicated to improving the lives of poverty-stricken and at-risk youth. Their strengths-based programs empower young people to break the cycles of poverty and homelessness by obtaining an education, making healthy life choices, and cultivating essential life skills. The agency's mentorship programs further prepare young people for success by teaching them valuable life skills and providing social and emotional support as they grow and develop. Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Westchester Department of Social Services Yonkers Service Center is a central access point for families who require assistance programs to improve their functioning. Their programs focus on empowering families to be healthy, stable, and safe. Family members that are unemployed can participate in programs to improve their employability. Families that have lost their homes can find resources through the agency's Homeless Services division. If vulnerable members of the family, such as children and the elderly, have experienced abuse or neglect, the Yonkers Service Center offers protective services to ensure their future safety.
