One of the symbols of the city of Indianapolis is the Soldier's Monument located in Monument Circle. The monuments the city has erected are designed to represent and symbolize the memory of the Civil War veterans who fought for the country.1 If you like history, you will also be interested in taking a visit into the many other museums located near Monument Circle. The Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial and the American Legion National Headquarters also provide tours and information about historical events from the area. In addition, you should schedule time to visit the Indiana State Capitol located in the heart of the city. If you are looking for a place in the city to stay, consider searching for hotel properties in the downtown or Monument Circle area, the Midtown area or the Pyramids. The city is big into sports; you can watch a professional basketball game, football game or horse racing. Indianapolis is also a great city to enjoy some wonderful restaurants and then an evening stroll.

Mental Health in Indianapolis

Mental health is an important issue for the people of Indianapolis. Mental illnesses are common, with 227,000 of the state's residents suffering from a serious condition. As a state, Indiana spends just $88 per capita on behavioral health services, meaning only 15 percent of adults in the state receive the care they require. As a result, large numbers of children and adults with severe mental illnesses are incarcerated in Indiana.2

The Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers (ICCMHC) is a non-profit organization with over two dozen affiliated health centers across the state. Five of these community-based centers are in the Indianapolis metro area. The ICCMHC ensures that member agencies receive the necessary state and federal funding to continue to provide services to the residents of Indianapolis. Inpatient and outpatient care for a wide range of behavioral and emotional disturbances is provided. Individuals suffering from severe mental illnesses and chronic addiction can also receive assistance at member agencies. All services are delivered in a respectful, caring, and dignified manner. Call 317-684-3684 for more information about ICCMHC member agencies and the services they provide.3

Current Education

Students who already hold a master's degree in a human services-related field can apply to the Butler University's Licensed Mental Health Counselor Certification program. The non-degree program requires participants to take three content courses and complete a 300-hour internship placement at a local mental health facility. Students must also pass the National Counselor Examination.4 Once these requirements are completed, graduates may apply for Indiana licensure through the Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board. Information about Indiana licensing can be obtained by calling 317-234-2054.5
