Monrovia, California is located 20 miles Northeast of Los Angeles. It is nestled in the San Gabriel foothills. Centuries ago, the area was inhabited by the Tongva Indians, who hunted game and gathered food in the San Gabriel Mountains. Once the Spanish explored the area, it was claimed for the Spanish king and came under his rule. Catholic priests came to the area soon thereafter and established many missions in an attempt to convert the native peoples to Catholicism. In the late 1800s, settlers from the east flocked to the area via the recently completed railroad. In 1887 Monrovia officially became a city.1

The district's after-school enrichment programs for reading and math offer students challenging activities and exercises that promote development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Physical education programs are available as well, from nutritional education to sports and recreation activities.4 The district's special needs students also can take advantage of a variety of services that enhance their functioning.
