Why I Do What I Do
I became a therapist to "give back". I received caring, compassionate help at a time of crisis in my own life. I know what it feels like. Once I got back on my feet, I pursued my dream of being able to support healing and growth for others who had been through rough times.  My experiences as "the client" have made me deeply compassionate and understanding as a therapist. I am committed to providing the very best professional care and treatment within my areas of specialty; that means you will receive the support and professional expertise you deserve.
My Education and Professional Experience
I graduated from Tulane University School of Social Work in 1998. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in 2001.  My early career was spent in New Orleans, working at an adolescent psychiatric hospital and at the District Attorney's Office. Eventually I became the Director of the YWCA Rape Crisis Program and remained in that position for 6 years (including before and after Hurricane Katrina). I am deeply familiar with the healing process following any kind of trauma: natural disaster, sexual assault, sexual abuse, domestic violence, stalking, human trafficking, and any other kind of traumatic experience you can think of!
Since 2010, I have been in private practice in Florida. My practice focuses on trauma issues, mood disorders (especially depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders), infidelity and betrayal, grief and loss, and transgender issues. I stay up-to-date on new treatments and their effectiveness by attending workshops, reading professional articles, and meeting regularly with colleagues for peer supervision. If you have read this far into my bio, you probably realize that being excellent at what I do is important to me. I personally know how powerful good therapy is, and I know how harmful bad therapy can be.
What You Can Expect From Me
If you are familiar with the process of therapy, you will find that my policies and procedures are drawn from the "best practices" recommendations in my field. If therapy is unfamiliar to you, allow me to explain a few things that may help you feel more comfortable and get the most out of your experience!
When you come to my office, we will begin with a few minutes of paperwork. It isn't complicated or long, but it does set the tone for professional services. We will discuss any questions you have. For example, I do not "friend" clients on Facebook or other social media. If you have questions about that, I will be happy to provide answers.
Once the paperwork is done, we will discuss what brings you to therapy. In our first session, I will take notes. In subsequent sessions, I will not take notes during the session. I take notes in the first session because all of the information you will tell me is brand-new to me, and I want to do my best to remember it accurately as we get to know one another.
I strongly believe that therapy is a collaborative process. We will work together. You are an expert on YOU. I am not going to tell you "do this, do that". I will provide a safe space for you to think, explore, feel, learn and grow.
As therapy progresses, you will find that my office becomes a safe haven for you. It is a place where you can be open and still feel safe. We will work on whatever is most important to you, and in whatever order you choose. My only agenda is for you to heal/grow as quickly and safely as possible!
