Have you gone through an intensive treatment program? Are you trying to figure out who you are now that you are sober? This is my area of specialty in addiction. I work with overspending and sexual addiction. Both of these are what are called "process addictions." With spending without much forethought and with sexual behavior regardless of consequences, lives are out of control. With both of these impulse disorders, I recommend 12 step groups as well as individual therapy with me. The groups help the person see their problems as they hear other people's stories and they also give hope and "sponsors." Our treatment helps them find out what needs they are really trying to meet and get in touch with their real feelings rather than "doping"with overspending or with sexually acting out. Note: I do not treat alcoholism or drug addiction.

The processes of change and recovery for individuals, couples, and families affected by addictions are complex. I work with you to being to explore where you are right now and I help you proceed toward a more healthy life by working in conjunction with self-help support groups and local treatment centers. Research studies have shown that mindfulness practices, which emphasize an attitude of acceptance toward thoughts of using substances, have actually led to a reduction in substance use. I have a special interest in working with adult children of alcoholics, who even though they may not be chemically dependent themselves, have been affected by their family environment.

Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.

"Addiction" is a word bandied about a great deal in common culture. It is so overused that it has lost any useful meaning. There are many forms of compulsive behavior. Some of them, like drug and alcohol use, involve physical dependency. Many are forms of distraction or avoidance from other feelings or thoughts that are overwhelming or upsetting. That is the basis of my approach and it works. Learning how to deal with feelings of want or need and making decisions about whether or not those feelings are to control specific behaviors is that basis of my work in this field.

I have co-run an addiction program serving people with alcohol and drug problems. I have often found that people are self medicating when they are using drugs, covering other problems such as anxiety or depression. In these cases both the addiction and underlying problems need to be addressed. I specialize in relapse prevention. Living one day at a time is what we all need to be doing.

I see any addictive behavior as a faulty coping strategy. People try all sorts of things in attempt to make themselves feel more comfortable, less anxious, or happier. We are all doing the best we can with what we have available to us at the time, and sometimes our "best" doesn't really help. In fact, it often causes harm to ourselves and others. I help clients understand the root causes of their addictive behavior, and how to meet their needs on a deeper level in healthy ways rather than destructive ways.

Recovering from addiction requires support, commitment, motivation and time. Committing to sobriety involves changes in how you think about yourself, and how you deal with stress and relationships. I believe treatment should address your specific needs and focus on more than the addiction. Success also depends on addressing the reasons for the addiction. I use a comprehensive and holistic approach that also helps you: enhance your motivation to participate in treatment; develop strategies for coping with cravings; learn skills to avoid and prevent relapse; learn to develop a healthier life-style; and address other health problems such as depression or anxiety. I also provide and recommend additional services such as support groups and group therapy,...(view profile to read more)

Many people attempt to avoid painful issues by taking pills, powders, or liquids and then waiting for the desired effect - an alteration of their consciousness. There are more positive ways to alter consciousness without turning to alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, sex, television, work, or any other activity that when used to excess, has a destructive impact on your life. Learning to change your mood by healthier more active methods involves some effort and motivation on your part but recovery from addiction is possible. We have experienced substance abuse professionals to help you make the changes you want to make

For clients facing Process Addictions, I approach clients from person-centered, existential, and cognitive behavioral therapy perspectives. I view process addictions as having their origins in multiple areas to include behavioral addiction, emotional triggers, low self-concept, shame, and low stress tolerance. I will work with you on the physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual front and educate you on the cycle of addiction and shame. In addition to working through the underlying shame, unfinished business, unfinished grief, low self-concept, and low stress tolerance, I would support you to employ CBT tools and developing more life purpose and resilience to prevent relapse.
