When reading about the addiction process and the progression of addiction, I was reminded that addiction and dependence on drugs, alcohol or any other object is more than drug tolerance and more than physical dependence. Studies have shown that the defining condition for addiction includes a psychological dependence. “Addicts…have no life without their drugs” (p.59). The alcoholic does not drink only because his body has developed a craving for it; he or she also drinks for the emotional support that the alcohol gives. The solution to most of the addict’s life problems becomes the drug. The need to use for pleasure is of course one of the reasons addicts continue to use.

Addictions (substance or behavioral) are often coping mechanisms you developed early in life to help you deal with anxiety, sadness, feeling like you don't fit in, feeling you don't matter, feeling powerless, or for numbing the pain of being criticized, abandoned, neglected, abused or traumatized in some other way. Traumatic events or a life time of upsetting events are often the root cause of addiction. I am a Certified EMDR Therapist with extensive experience in helping adults heal from and put in the past the upsetting events that contribute to their addiction. EMDR Therapy is highly effective and is offered at all the leading residential treatment programs for addiction recovery.
