Clients are helped to become consciously aware of how the addiction has taken control of their lives. Using their own abilities, the client develops coping skills to work through the realities of life without depending on alcohol or drugs. We explore the underlining emotions suppressed by alcohol or drugs. The client begins to regain control of their life.

When working with addictions it is important to have a strong support system. That is why as a part of my treatment, I highly recommend participation in a sober support group. By combining that support and a treatment approach that recognizes that overcoming addiction is a process, therapy can be very successful. Identifying triggers (people, places, and things) and establishing effective coping skills to better handle life's stressors is a key component of addictions therapy. Although it is often said, "I'm an addict," I treat my clients as not being an addict, but someone who struggles with addiction.

Letting go of an addiction is hard work – but living with addiction isn't really living, is it? Our cravings and obsessions can run our lives. But how to take charge again? I believe that addiction serves an important purpose. In some way, it allows you to survive and cope with stressors, helps you to calm down, or wake up, or feel better, at least for awhile. We will work to understand the why of your addiction - what deep longing the addictive behavior is trying to fill so desperately, but unsuccessfully. You can learn healthier ways to comfort yourself, ways that bring you closer to people you love, instead of distancing them. You will take back the power to run your own life!!!

Problems with mood altering chemicals (e.g., alcohol, heroin) or behaviors (e.g., gambling, sex) are still not well understood by scientists. Explanations for compulsive use which claim the cause is a disease or brain disorder lack supporting evidence. Counseling an individual with such problems requires taking into consideration a wide variety of contributing environmental, biological, psychological (e.g., mental health problems) factors. Treatment is typically tailored to the client and will usually involve addressing motivational factors, the client's goals, and educating the family on how they can exert a reinforcing and supportive role in the client's resolution of their problem(s).

Although not an addictions counselor, I help clients who struggle with others in their lives that struggle with an addiction. I often instruct clients on way to identify unhealthy vs. healthy boundaries in relating to their addicted loved one. I teach clients about codependency and specific techniques on handling the "traps" of being close to someone with an addiction. If help clients determine if they have an addiction and give them resources on best treatment options. Family therapy helps client families better relate to one another and deal with addiction in a more healthy way.
