My personal belief is that the typical anger management classes just teach people more ways to stuff their anger. I believe in teaching my clients how to release/heal their anger in healthy ways. I have learned a number of techniques from John Lee ("Facing the Fire" is an excellent book on his personal experience of dealing with anger). Techniques range from relatively "mild" to more intensive. Anger work is always done in "controlled" ways.

We all feel angry from time to time. It is a natural human emotion. But expressing anger in a way that hurts other people can damage relationships and careers, cause financial and legal problems, and even damage our health. Anger management can be learned. You must learn to identify the triggers, thoughts and feelings that lead to the inappropriate expression of anger. You must learn new, more effective coping responses for when you get angry. Assertive communication patterns will help you get your needs met while respecting the needs of others. Learning effective anger management techniques will help you de-escalate volatile situations, lower your stress, and improve your relationships!

Anger is a natural human emotion that affects us all from time to time. It is how we handle anger that is important. Anger management will teach you the skills to communicate anger healthily; to be assertive, not passive or aggressive; and to identify your triggers and develop coping responses to avoid, cope or escape from situations that trigger your anger.

My anger management treatment is a combination of cognitive therapy, relaxation techniques and affect management techniques designed to help you identify feelings underlying the anger and ways to better address the true desire and function of the emotion. Then you will also acquire more assertive communication skills to more effectively convey the request which the anger inspires from the deeper emotional level. In addition, mindfulness meditation skills and the deconstruction of judgments which are the basis of anger will be discussed.

Most commonly, I work with men who need help with anger. All of us can lose our cool and hurt other people, but some of us are more likely to express ourselves through anger. There are many reasons why someone might have this issue. The key to learning to redirect ourselves at the critical moment is to be aware of our felt sense at the time. Most people are able to detect, when they train themselves to do so, a charge of emotion in the body. At such times, one must absent the situation before he says and or does something regrettable. It is helpful to learn to be mindful of our felt senses so we can drain the stress through special techniques and also avoid losing control.

Anger can harm our relationships, career, academics and even our sense of self. Anger is usually a symptom of deeper issues within ourselves or our struggles to cope with others' issues. Underneath of anger is often pain, fear, shame and loneliness. Learning coping skills for anger management is helpful. However, addressing its' origins and the related boundary issues leads to an overall reduction in negative feelings, rather than just learning to tolerate them. I can help you discover the source of unproductive anger and guide you in the process of resolving it, so that anger becomes a useful tool for alerting you of trouble, rather than causing more of it.

There are many reasons why people are unable to control their anger; often it is a family or cultural pattern that has never been questioned. In some families women are not allowed to express anger; in others being angry is unacceptable and a sign or failure for all. Tiredness, stress, pain and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to the problem. We all have ‘hooks’ for our anger whether it is a person pushing in front of a queue or being ignored. Understanding what they are and re-examining our thoughts around them can be among the first steps to managing anger. Anger is a basic emotion which has allowed us to survive as a species. When a baby screams because it is hungry, too hot or too cold, it is displaying its raw anger. Anger is the emotion of...(view profile to read more)
