Is your anger causing difficult consequences in your life? Many therapists can assist with its management, but I would like to also help with exploring the reason your anger gets bigger than others. Anger says "we are being violated", so what is this sense of violation. Does it spring from some situation from the past? Your anger is real, and makes sense in the context of your life experience. It is your "normal." Together we may be able to create a new normal. A personal message to men; you guys can do this too, and real strength comes from being able to accept help when we need it. Do this for yourself, do this for those you love, and never want to unintentionally hurt again.

Anger often covers up sadness and it is my job to help people have better insight as to how their emotions are working for them. Or in many cases, how their emotions are not working for them. I use a variety of techniques to help people better understand themselves and how their emotions and behaviors are impacting relationships. Anger is a normal emotion that can be helpful in some cases. However, it is generally preferable to have insight and awareness so that we can choose when, where and how to be angry.

My belief is that all our emotions are meant to teach us something. If we are sad, I become curious about what has been lost and with anger, I become curious about how we may have been hurt or violated in some capacity. The more aware we are about what our emotions are trying to teach us, the better able we are to react from a place of knowledge and information. When we are emotionally reactive we often say and do things we may later regret. I believe the real work comes from becoming curious about what is underneath the anger and then working with my clients to find helpful, healthy strategies to express those feelings.

The human brain is a brilliant organ that keeps us safe by connecting and comparing the pain of the past to the present moment, on conscious and unconscious levels. For some of us, especially for those who have been emotionally wounded earlier in life, this tendency towards a primitive "fight" response is in actuality highly disruptive and even destructive. I help clients to revisit and process their initial wounds in a safe environment and teach them that they are capable of responding to emotional triggers in a more constructive way. Actual body monitoring and "brain work' is done that assist clients in moving from a primitive reactive response to a more safe intentional response.
