Managing anxiety and stress not only involves discovering triggers that are the cause, but also in understanding and managing the brain. Our brain, in a valiant never-ceasing effort to keep us safe, spends much of its time sizing up the environment, hyper-vigilantly comparing the here and now to a vast memory bank of information stored under the category of 'danger and pain'. Triggers in the here and now are attached by the brain to more severe, or even traumatic events from the past, causing a "fight, flight, or freeze" response which overwhelms the central nervous system. I assist clients in recognizing these triggers and in managing their effects through therapy and relaxation work.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to a potential threat, however we can become anxious about issues that are not life threatening. Anxiety becomes a problem when the symptoms disrupt our daily activities or cause conflicts in our relationships. Anxiety also impacts our physical bodies and these symptoms (headaches, shortness of breath, stomach aches, fatigue, etc…) are often overlooked as something a therapist can help resolve. During therapy you will gain a better understanding about anxiety, what makes you anxious, how your body communicates, and strategies to overcome these emotions.

The Power Path, LLC. I apply Cognitive-Behavior, DBT, Mindfulness and Solution-Focused practices when treating Anxiety Disorders. I evaluate the severity of symptoms. Talk therapy and psychiatric treatments maybe recommended. I educate clients on how to recognize anxious reactions as they occur in the present moment and learn the skill of grounding. I encourage people to incorporate the daily practice of both informal and formal mindfulness behaviors. In addition, CBT is very effective in slowing down and challenging worry and fear ridden thoughts that cause elevated emotional arousal. Anxiety is on a continuum from mild worry to phobias to panic attacks. Worry makes things worse than they really are and anticipates "what might happen if..." Possibly you are just stressed out due to life circumstances. There are coping strategies that are easy to learn in counseling to help you maintain a more calm demeanor with others in your life. Panic attacks are periods of intense fear or discomfort that develops suddenly and peaks within 10 minutes. In counseling you can discover the source and then root out the cause so that you don't have to experience this extremely uncomfortable situation anymore.

Anxiety, worry, stress, fear, loss of control; everyone in our modern, technological, fast-paced world is familiar with these struggles! If you come to me with help for anxiety, I will focus first on helping you develop ways of fighting and living with it. While I believe everyone can benefit from in-depth work on the roots of anxiety, my first priority is helping you cope better and gain a measure of freedom from the grip of worry. Good health requires a moderate amount of appropriate stress. Our goal will be, not to eliminate worry, but to reduce your anxiety to that healthy level where life is refreshingly challenging but not paralyzingly impossible.

I approach the treatment of anxiety and stress from a bioneurological approach. I begin with obtaining a thorough history, and determine client goals. In most circumstances, I teach about what anxiety and stress are, and the effects on the body. I then teach coping skills using cognitive behavioral therapies, mindfulness practices, and EMDR. My goal for my client is self-regulation, and obtaining the tools to manage their stressors independently. The length of treatment depends upon the number of stressors, length of time the client has had the symptoms, and overall health of the client. This is one of my favorite areas to treat, because of client success.

Let's be honest - there are many experiences and relationships that bring a lot of anxiety and stress into our lives. We can feel uncomfortable in the presence of others, fearful that our vision for life won't unfold how we want it to, or the challenge of making progress and using our time and energy in productive ways. We all struggle with this at different levels, but I believe we can take hope that because of who God is and in a close relationship with Him, we have a future that is incredibly bright. I want to offer clarity on how this is true even when it doesn't feel like it in your life.

Anxiety and stress can be addressed in several ways. First, I will listen carefully to what you say and validate you by paraphrasing and summarizing what you have said. This will help you hear more clearly what you are thinking. We may explore ways that you are thinking and how they might be replaced with other thoughts in order to reduce or remove stress and anxiety. In case your feelings have been caused by a traumatic experience, if you are comfortable doing so, we might utilize some mindfulness exercises which may relieve the trauma and the resulting stressors. If necessary, I may suggest that you see a psychiatrist for medication or refer you to a specialist who is specially trained.
