Relationships are difficult. They take work. Are you and your partner finding that you are not as connected as you once were? Are you finding that sex is not as fulfilling or that you have lost the intimate connection you desire? In working with couples your relationship is the client. We will identify your goals for the relationship and together put together a treatment plan to reach the goals. We are skilled at working with heterosexual, same sex, and unique love relationships.
Since most of the work in your relationship will be done outside of a therapy session, after the intake phase we will meet for a 75 minute session every other week.

Relationships are ever changing and developing a healthy connection that can withstand the changes is ever evolving. If you or your partner are experiencing times of disconnection, couple's therapy can provide a place to understand the disconnection and learn ways to begin to support, listen and understand each other to develop a strong emotional connection to weather all the changes in life.

We are a husband/wife co/therapy team. Our main focus is marriage, couple and premarital counseling. One of our main counseling approaches that we use is Emotional Focused Therapy by Dr Susan Johnson. We have had extensive training in EFT counseling. When your relationship is going through a tough time, taking the proactive approach may be just what you need to save and build your relationship. Talk to your spouse about the current condition of your marriage, as well as the problems the two of you are going through. Try to work together to solve these issues infecting your marriage before your problems end up destroying it. Couple counseling can be helpful to a deeper connection.

Couple counseling is helping a couple to develop a number of key skills. These include communicating clearly, listening, emotional expression, negotiating, being respectful, managing conflict, problem solving and finding ways to negotiate how they connect and also how they create separation in healthy ways. Couples can get suck when these skills are not well developed. My approach to couple work is to assess the relationship strengths and build on these while teaching key skills and resolving the challenges the couple faces. While looking at old issues is useful at times, I generally focus on how to build a clear & hopeful future. My clinical approach is direct, supportive and active.

It’s supposed to be so easy, isn’t it? Find that special person, create a life together, have lots of great sex, and live happily ever after. One of the biggest myths about relationships, is that it’s supposed to come easily and effortlessly. Well, life isn’t always like that so why should being in a couple relationship be different?
As they always say, you get what you put in. If you have a bank account, and don’t deposit money into it, you can’t create savings, interest, or take out a bit of spending money for some spontaneous fun! But, if you take the time to learn about how the account works, and make regular deposits, your relationship will work for you instead of against you.

I know that when I work with couples I have to quickly give them some hope that they can actually work out their differences. I find that it is imperative from the beginning to give both people in the relationship an individual and adequate opportunity to be heard about the pain that they are experiencing. In my role as a therapist I teach people about the art and science of communication and give them specific handouts on how they can successfully be able to understand both the thoughts and the pain of one another successfully. I am extremely practical and do a lot of in session work with role plays and modeling. I spend time on conflict resolution, problem solving and forgiveness.

Once the initial infatuation wears off, couples often find themselves hurting each other without meaning to. It may be hard to make a relationship work because we're stuck in patterns we're not aware of. It can also be because we're doing things for our partner that would make us feel loved, but they need something different. I'll help you identify and change the interactions in your relationship that prevent you from expressing and receiving love in ways that bring you closer.

Couples counseling may or may not include a married couple. I see dating, premarital and married couples who are of all sexual orientations. Although I prefer to focus on relationship enhancement, I also work with couples who are in the process of separating or transitioning in other ways (e.g., terminal illness, military deployments, etc). Couples whose children are transitioning often benefit greatly from couples work. I also find it very important for divorcing or separating couples with children to seek counseling together in order to reduce the negative impact on the children; divorce counseling can help with closure and help keep things more amicable in an otherwise arduous process

Most families begin with a couple. Whether same-sex or opposite sex couples, every pair goes through, at one point or another, within their relationship a period where things becoming too much or getting someone involved who has less of an immediate emotional attachment would be beneficial for working through the many issues couples face. Whether the issues are with communication, sex, or everything in between, I can work with you both on resolving life's turbulence and getting your relationship back on the smooth track or helping couples heal if saving the relationship is something that is decided is necessary.

I believe strongly in the "Imago" concept crated by Harville Hendrix that we are drawn unconsciously to our partner through familiarily with the entire continuum of positive and negative characteristics they possess, as they qualities are familiar to us from our primary families. Not all couples need to work with these beliefs however; some need only some guidance to return to the healthy road they were already on. Others need more understanding of what brought them together, and with that understanding and guidance in helping progresss to a place more healthy than their family-of-origin. I see myself as a competent guide in helping couples discover their potentials.
