I know that when I work with couples I have to quickly give them some hope that they can actually work out their differences. I find that it is imperative from the beginning to give both people in the relationship an individual and adequate opportunity to be heard about the pain that they are experiencing. In my role as a therapist I teach people about the art and science of communication and give them specific handouts on how they can successfully be able to understand both the thoughts and the pain of one another successfully. I am extremely practical and do a lot of in session work with role plays and modeling. I spend time on conflict resolution, problem solving and forgiveness.

What are the most common couples' issues? If you are thinking "communication, conflict, sex, money, child rearing" you are correct. However, most therapists will go after the symptom on each side of the couple fence thinking that the way to effective change is by getting each party to "work" on their respective "issue".
