I approach Depression as I do any other "feeling state". Simply, everyone experiences the same emotions, as mentioned above in the paragraph about grief. As unpleasant as it seems, I believe that it MUST have a purpose and once that purpose is satisfied the feeling goes back into the background until it is needed again. I encourage the use of medications for a while, as a part of the therapeutic experience, and I've been told that the combination seems to work very well for a lot of people. My focus is positive and I encourage the same from my clients.

Is something getting you down? Is life not going as planned? Life throws us curves sometimes and we may feel stuck due to behaviors, influences, and circumstances. I enjoy counseling individuals who are struggling with a variety of circumstances. I use an eclectic approach to counseling. This means that I am trained in numerous therapeutic approaches. In a counseling session we will explore emotional and cognitive barriers, past and present relationships, and collaboratively devise therapy goals. I would like to help assist you in a safe and therapeutic environment to provide some tools, support, or coping and problem solving skills in a nonjudgmental and caring environment.

The difference between sadness and depression is vast. Sadness fades over time and when a situation gets better then the persons mood improves. Sadness also generally has a situational cause. The same cannot be said of depression. It is relentless and persistent and does not go away just because situations around you get better. It feels like a dark cloud following you around on what would be a sunny day to anyone else. I have worked with hundreds of individuals or the past 10 years of inpatient work to help them understand and work toward better management of their depression.

Until you feel the heaviness that sadness and depression that can often create, it is difficult for many to understand. In my experience working with individuals struggling with depression, I find that working on short-term goals for bettering your life is most helpful. Short-term goals often lead to increases in self-esteem and provide people with the ability to shed light on areas that before, seemed impossible to change. I remind my clients that small changes can often yield big results. It is those slight changes in perspective that help us through those difficult times.

Depression can be a temporary problem, based on a specific event or transition in your life that is difficult to process or resolve. It can also be a constant, debilitating emotion, with seemingly no cause, that disrupts your sleep and eating habits and motivation to do things you used to enjoy and socialize with friends. We can work with you to identify the cause and process through it until you feel better and want to have fun again. Sometimes medication is necessary, even temporarily, to alleviate the symptoms and we will recommend that if we feel it is necessary. There is no reason for you to continue simply existing when you could be LIVING your life.

Let's take a look at your level of sadness through questionnaires and reports from loved ones to see if what you are experiencing is within the normal range or beyond that. If it is more than what is generally experienced, you may benefit from a doctor's care treating depression with medicine. If your sadness and lack of hope are manageable, or medication is required, we will work to find out what is causing distress, learn skills which promote resolution of sadness, help you to cope with life, help to open up healthy communication and resolve conflicts with those important to you, and maintain an active lifestyle which promotes fitness and improved mood for your life.

You don't have to live under the shadow of depression. Maybe you feel unmotivated, fatigued, disinterested, sad, or numb but it can change. Depression is more than a problem with the way you feel emotionally because it negatively impacts your relationships, productivity, attention, memory, and physical health. To treat depression I do talk therapy to give people the knowledge and skills to reduce their depressive symptoms but I also help them restore their connection to others and renew their hope and respect for themselves.

Depression Therapist

Kevin Fleming Ph.D.

Coach/Change Agent/Consultant

San Antonio, TX 78207

Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. Instead, why not try a natural and arguably more effective way to not just change your mind, but change the brain--where the depression is rooted. Contact us at kevin@kevinflemingphd.com.
