Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. Instead, why not try a natural and arguably more effective way to not just change your mind, but change the brain--where the depression is rooted. Contact us at kevin@kevinflemingphd.com.

Depression is a serious issue that often requires a collaboration between doctors and therapists. While some people find that taking depression medication works for them, others find that it is not often enough to help work through some of the things that may be contributing to their depression. Others may feel down from time to time and would describe themselves as being depressed without an actual diagnosis. Counseling is helpful because it can help clients who wish to use psychotherapy in conjunction with medication, as well as those who wish to try counseling as as a first choice before medical intervention.

I approach Depression as I do any other "feeling state". Simply, everyone experiences the same emotions, as mentioned above in the paragraph about grief. As unpleasant as it seems, I believe that it MUST have a purpose and once that purpose is satisfied the feeling goes back into the background until it is needed again. I encourage the use of medications for a while, as a part of the therapeutic experience, and I've been told that the combination seems to work very well for a lot of people. My focus is positive and I encourage the same from my clients.

Gaining social support, changing lifestyles, and finding the right therapist is the key to treating depression. Once therapy is started, I immediately begin to examine the client’s relationships (past & present), begin setting healthy boundaries, and start tackling life stressors. Clients will begin to change the way the think about a stressor, and as a result, feel better, and act appropriately in response to the stressors. Until you feel the heaviness that sadness and depression that can often create, it is difficult for many to understand. In my experience working with individuals struggling with depression, I find that working on short-term goals for bettering your life is most helpful. Short-term goals often lead to increases in self-esteem and provide people with the ability to shed light on areas that before, seemed impossible to change. I remind my clients that small changes can often yield big results. It is those slight changes in perspective that help us through those difficult times.

Everyone experiences sadness at some point in their lives, particularly after a loss. And many of us also have had the thought at sometime or another, "I wish I could just go to bed and not wake up." But what sets apart clinical depression from severe sadness is how long the sadness has been occurring, how intense it feels, and how much in interferes in the daily activities of life. It has been fulfilling for me to assist in moving clients from the depths of despair to regaining the ability to feel like themselves again.
