Michelle Kelley, LCSW

Are you or a loved one struggling with a possible eating disorder? The types of eating disorders which I see the most include bulimia, binge eating disorder, restricting calories, excessive exercising, and night eating syndrome. Women and teens are the most susceptible. Girls/women often struggle with body image and the "ideal body type". There is a tremendous amount of pressure to look a certain way. I get it. Please reach out to me if you are not sure about the diagnosis. I can help with that too.

Contrary to popular belief, eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and compulsive over eating are really not about food or"self control" or lack of it. There are a complex mixture of causes, each case being unique. Often times it is helpful to work in conjunction with a medical doctor and a nutritionist, while I help the client uncover the beliefs that lead to the addictive behaviors. Once we find the cause and the beliefs that hold the behaviors in place, we can change them, ultimately changing the damaging patterns.

Eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are rooted in inability to handle emotions of fear and anger, and developing weight and food issues as coping mechanisms. EDs can have life-threatening consequences for females and males. Treatment focuses on learning new coping skills for dealing with stress, negativity, emotion regulation, and awareness of changes in attitude, spiraling thinking patterns, beliefs and choice making. Meditation, deep breathing, interpersonal and experiential psychotherapy are also part of treatment, to complement work with nutritionist for meal planning, nutritional basics and relapse prevention as necessary.
