Eating disorders are complex and impact mental health as well as physical health. This affliction usually starts very early in life. 40-60% of elementary age girls (6-12) are unhappy with their weight. This thought continues throughout life. Our society imposes impossible expectations. Creating the need to change to become accepted. We can work together to repair this and understand the mental and physical impact of this disorder.

Our society and culture often perpetuate the need to be something other than what we are. The media also drives home the message that we are not “thin, smart, fit, pretty, etc.” enough. Listening to these messages we may find ourselves stuck in destructive patterns where we buy into the game of comparisons. In the process we can find ourselves fighting for control through our actions. Clients often report feeling as though they are not enough and have feelings of anger, loneliness and shame. This struggle can be very severe and so I encourage clients to seek intensive care when they are in the initial phase of their recovery. I often work with clients when they are in the maintenance phase.

I strongly recommend that clients in the initial stages of their recovery seek the services of an eating disorder specialist. I am an appropriate therapist for those who have gone through initial recovery and are in the long-term management stages of their eating disorder. I assist clients in processing their life story, in understanding the emotional triggers that could lead to relapse, to provide support in dealing with anxiety, stress, fear, and sadness.
