We treat burgeoning eating disorders in children and adolescents. We understand the link between eating disorders and anxiety and work closely with other mental health professionals to form a team. On staff at Linden Oaks Hospital, there is access to programming both for inpatient and partial. Depending on the specific situation, there is also an understanding of different approaches to treatment depending upon the age of the adolescent, family involvement and time spent engaged with the eating disorder. If you come to Tompkins and Associates, you will be given choices of treatment based upon your unique circumstances and needs. We understand how this disease affects the entire family.

In my work with clients who have eating disorders, it is important to look at the reasons behind the eating disorder behaviors. Often times, inaccurate views of body image, trauma, and/or lack of control underly a client's eating disorder. I will work with that client to identify they "why's" behind anorexia, bulimia, binging behaviors, etc. Once a client can recognize these triggers, a treatment plan will be formulated between therapist and client to ensure that attainable goals are set out in order to instill healthier sef-image, relief from anxiety, and decreased cognitive distortions.

In addition to treating Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and other types of disordered eating behaviors, I specialize in working with people struggling with Binge-Eating Disorder and compulsive overeating. I encourage clients to examine the reasons for their behaviors and identify the underlying issues that are driving the eating disordered behaviors in order to help them stop self-destructive patterns. Using a strengths-based, Cognitive-Behavioral approach, I can help you learn how to challenge negative thoughts related to food, weight, and body image so that you can gain a sense of freedom and control in your life separate from the eating disorder.

Eating Disorders cross the span of gender, culture and socio-economic class. Whether you struggle with anorexia, bulmia, over exercising or body image distortions, I can help facilitate a more peaceful way to live. ED have many different sources but often stem from a lack of self-esteem, perfectionism or as a means to self-soothe. Studies show that cognitive behavorial therapy combined with insight oriented therapy often offer the most satisfying means to overcome an Eating Disorder. I use both approaches, I also work closely with several residential programs, when there is a need for more comprehensive care. My clients find long lasting growth and satisfication in their therapy with me.

When most people think of eating disorders, they think it only pertains to girls. However, an increasing number of boys and men are struggling with eating disorders and body image. Boys are often feel isolated when dealing with an eating disorder and do not know where to turn. I assist boys and men to determine if it is an eating disorder they are struggling with. I help them identify the causes and offer them a variety of resources to help educate them.

I believe that eating disorders do not exist independently; I strongly believe that there are other issues such as depression and/or low self esteem, with the eating disorder being the only area where the individual feels a sense of control. My approach would be to assist the individual in working through the other stressors, decreasing the need for control through eating disorders. I would encourage medical care as needed. I

I have had the privilege of working with patients at Timberline Knolls (a residential treatment center for women specializing in addictions and eating disorders) and gaining knowledge and skills in treating eating disorders. One treatment approach through the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy -- a type of therapy that emphasizes mindfulness in response to acting-out behaviors. I believe and have seen that this approach is very effective in the treatment of eating disorders (Bulimia and Anorexia). Contact me and we can discuss treatment.
