In dealing with families, I strive to help to improve communication and conflict resolution techniques. Often, members of familiies mean well, but express their needs and dis-satisfactions in a way that increases conflict and turmoil. In home conflicts often escalate and lead to withdrawal or explosive incidents. A calmer, problem resolution is possible in and office setting with a neutral party. In such a setting, we are usually able to effect better listening to one another and achieve the kind of understanding and acceptance that leads to greater family harmony.

Understandng family dynamics and how they evolve within a family unit is essential in treatiing the families I work with. Much of the work I do with families revolves around understanding boundaries and the consequences of unhealthy enmeshment. Together as a unit, the family learns limit setting, appropriate and healthy boundary setting in addition to new coping skills that will help decision making.

If you are struggling in a close relationship with conflict, distance and/or withdrawal, or feel that there is no longer an emotional connection with your partner or other family members, it can be helpful to work with a therapist. It is not just as easy as “how you communicate.” Therapy can help you take an objective look at emotional, thinking and behavioral patterns that perhaps no longer are effective and test new methods of interaction to improve your relationships. This can be applied in your relationships with your spouse, your children, parents and friends, neighbors and work colleagues.

Family therapy is an extremely important part of my practice. By working with just one individual in the family unit, it can be difficult to instill lasting change. However, if all family members can come together, change be quicker and more permanent. My goal is to mediate, assist in compromise, and come up with solutions to what has brought the family in for counseling in the first place.

Home Psych Services, P.C. provides home-based family therapy. We believe this is the most effective way to treat family problems by impacting these family problems where they usually start - in the home. We have multiple professionals including social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists that are able to address family problems from multiple different viewpoints. We are in the unique position of being able to observe how family problems play out in session in the actual environment where these problems started in the first place. This puts us in a unique position to diagnose and treat family problems.
North Shore Center for Marital Therapy
Trained in the Internal Family Systems model by leading expert Dr. Richard Schwartz over 20 years ago, R. Hutcheson is one of the most experienced IFS therapists in the country. She has applied the model for 22 years and it is a uniquely successful therapy to improve individual and marital health. The idea is that we have many often conflicting parts of ourselves that impact relationships and individual function and these can be modified quickly and easily with awareness and compassion.

When a member of a family becomes ill or disabled, the entire family will be affected. Confusion, fear, anxiety and even anger can occur - even after the person recovers - such as with a cancer survivor. With my Registered Nursing and Counseling background I can help families understand some of the changes that are taking place due to the illness. Talking about what each member is experiencing can help all understand each other and lead to finding ways to handle the uncertainty. When you have a plan for coping with the illness or effects of the illness, tensions can decrease, and the family can find a "new normal" - a new way of being together. Different, but still good - still family

I work specifically with adult children who are needing guidance, help and support around choices that need to be made for an aging parent. I am aware that issues can arise between siblings when Mom or Dad becomes ill or needs extra care. With background including many years of counseling with individuals, couples and families, the elderly and as a Hospice Social Worker, I am available to provide you support, education, guidance and the help you are needing at this time.

Have you ever noticed how one person's problem in the family affects everyone? This is true in all families, even the Brady Bunch! One of the reasons this occurs is because our reactions to each other often serve to "keep the problem, the problem". Working together as a family in counseling gets people off the blame-game and on to ways of relating that bring the respect back. As a specialist in family systems counseling and clinical author in professional literature I enjoy working with families of all ages in a variety of interactive/experiential methods to help family members learn how to communicate and connect. The end result is increased harmony and productivity.

The family is the most important institution in society and I take great pleasure in helping a family to resolve their issues and move towards health and happiness. I understand as the mother of 4 children myself what the pressures there are for families. We are in a bad ecoonomy now and many families face economic uncertainty and stress. My focus in family therapy is to build cohesiveness and resiliance.

While I do family therapy with my clients, it is something that I do not jump right into. Usually a parent will call to bring his/her son into see me. The son is my primary client and it is important to me to get to know him and start to establish a relationship. Over time, I will discuss with him the benefits of bringing parents and even siblings into the session. I have found that if I bring the family in too soon, I often lose the trust and relationship with my primary clients. In family therapy, I use a systems approach and focus not only on the individual issues for each family issue, but also watch closely to see how the family interacts with one another.
Nathaniel Hope, LCSW, LLC
I've been working with families from many different backgrounds and cultures for most of my career. Family work is one of the most under appreciated and important tools for dealing with issues related to therapy. I will begin with a family session that includes everyone and then meet everyone individually. I'll make sure everyone feels heard and no one feels singled out. I use a systems approach to family therapy and find that Family therapy in general has a better success rate than individual therapy.

In family therapy I treat the dynamic of the relationship between family members. We all have a deep need to belong and feel accepted by others. This starts in our family of origin. If things are preventing us from feeling accepted by our families we seek other places to feel that connection. By helping each person feel heard, understood and accepted by their family members we can create significant change.
Robert Dargel, LCSW, CEAP, CADC
Family can be a source of support ...AND stress depending on how we are communicating and responding to one another's needs. I can help you improve communication and get better at understanding and respecting the needs and feelings of each member of the family. I work with families with children older than 14 since I do not work with young children.

I have utilized family therapy with families experiencing substance abuse and/or divorce. I encourage family members to respect the views of other family members, even if they do not agree with them. I may suggest that family members change roles during therapy sessions, for an enhanced understanding of the views of other family members, although I do not have an expectation that this will lead to their agreeing with that family member. I encourage respect between family members. So, it would then follow that I discourage family members from name calling and/or labeling the behaviors of other family members. My goal is to increase their understanding and acceptance of each other.
