San Francisco California is one of the most famous cities in the world, and is known for its architecture and earthquakes. Some of the more famous landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the cable cars, Coit Tower and Chinatown. Mental Health in San Francisco

San Francisco has one of the lowest per capita rates of serious mental illness in California at just 3.5 percent. The region also has one of the largest concentrations of psychiatrists in the state.2 However, over 12 percent of the city's residents live in poverty. Nearly 11 percent of San Franciscans have a substance abuse problem and 22 percent have used in illicit drug in the last year - rates far higher than the national average.3

The Mental Health Association of San Francisco (MHASF) takes on the responsibility of educating the public about mental health issues and advocating on behalf of those who live with mental illness and chemical dependency. A primary goal of the organization is to increase access to quality, affordable mental health care that provides compassionate solutions for those in need. Additionally, the organization seeks to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness by advancing mental health practices that are built upon a foundation of dignity and respect. Current Education

The San Francisco area has many educational options for people who wish to enter the behavioral health field as a practitioner. San Francisco State University is just one school that offers programs to prepare individuals for mental health work. Their master's degree programs in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, and marriage, family, and child counseling provide students with an excellent foundation of best practices in counseling, an appreciation for multiculturalism, and a broad skillset to serve those in need. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the National Counselor Exam and are additionally eligible for licensure by the Board of Behavioral Sciences of California.
