Greater Sudbury Ontario was incorporated as a city in the 1930s and is located in Northern Ontario with attractions geared toward family entertainment. Due to the large mining industry in the city, there is an interactive museum, Science North, that is built on top of an ancient earthquake fault, which is on the shore of Lake Ramsey. This location is great for families with children and teenagers of all ages, while providing an educational experience and fun in a central place. Christian counseling psychotherapy can help individuals reclaim and recapture their goals that get put on hold in the mundane of daily life. The city also hosts an annual film festival held in September and is also trying to implement a performing arts centre in order to attract concert tours.1 Furthermore, this town hosts the Northern Lights Festival boreal and La Nuit sur I’etang, both of which are family-friendly and suitable for children as well as teenagers. In terms of schools, Gauvreau is one option for families with children; however, those seeking higher education may find Cambrian College of interest.
Mental Health in Greater Sudbury
In a recent health survey, most Sudbury residents reported that their mental health was very good or excellent. That's great news for the people in the area. However, 18.8 percent of respondents reported that their lives are quite a bit or extremely stressful."2 Stress has negative effects on health, including increasing the risks for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and immunity. Stress also leads to risky behaviors, such as smoking, consuming alcohol in excess and unhealthy eating habits. Many people find that they're able to better cope with stress when participating in counseling services. Here, they learn stress management techniques and how to modify their behaviors.
The Sudbury Counseling Center is one of the agencies in the area that provides general counseling services to help clients deal with a broad range of issues. Services are available for individuals, families, couples and teens to help clients learn to cope with daily stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges. The agency's programs are funded through client fees, the government and private donors. For more information about their services, call the intake worker at 705-524-9629.3
Current Education
Nearly half of Sudbury's residents are in marital or common law relationships. Most relationships bring with them a certain element of stress. The Sudbury Counseling Center is offering a new couples group to help couples strengthen bonds and have long-lasting relationships.
For women whose relationships cause more than stress and are actually abusive, the Voices for Women Sudbury agency provides counseling and support services, including education, training, planning and outreach. The agency can be reached at 705-671-5495.4
