The marital relationship is a tug of war for power and control. Relationships need to permit the expression of emotions otherwise anger can leave the couple in a state of despair and confusion. Take responsibility, leaving blame behind, leads to relationship repair.

The Bergen County Department of Health Services offers a free parenting education class for parents who are divorced or separated. Called Children in the Middle, the class helps enlighten parents about the impact of their actions on their children and builds parenting skills that help their children cope with the stress, anger, and hurt often associated with divorce. Parents also learn how to use self-talk, I-messages, and active listening to improve communication with their former partner. The group is offered several times a month and is offered free of charge. Call 201-634-2695 to learn more.2

Coping with physical illness, death, and other age-related issues can be made easier by engaging in a peer support group. For older members of the family, support groups are available at the Southeast Senior Center. Their As Life Changes group offers insights into life transitions in the golden years. Group members are able to share their experiences and receive guidance from other participants. The Coping with Health Issues group also provides support for the elderly as they or a loved one struggle with the mental and physical stress of an illness. Women and men who are single can take part in a support group offered by St. Peter's Church. The group meets twice monthly and provides participants a time to discuss life's problems and worries in a safe setting with others who have had similar experiences. Group members work through painful feelings in small group discussions and take strength from the successes of others. They also engage in social and recreational activities throughout the year in order to build friendships and a positive support network that reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Family Guidance Department of the Bergen County Government offers an array of resources for families experiencing a crisis related to finances, housing, conflict, or a mental health issue. The County can connect families with job training and educational programs so they can gain the skills they need to be self-sufficient. Rental assistance programs and emergency shelters for family and youth are also available. Various youth programs seek to address the needs of children who are psychologically fragile, who have a substance abuse issue, or who have become involved in the juvenile justice system. The County's Juvenile Family Crisis Intervention Unit is also available to help families manage conflicts, provide stabilization services, and coordinate mental health services.
