Marriage and Family Mental Health in Rochester
Helping young fathers overcome barriers to supporting their children is the primary focus of the Fatherhood Connection. This program focuses in particular on the financial and emotional involvement that fathers need to have with their children. Most program participants are young, unemployed, or both. By learning how to support themselves through education, hard work, and job readiness, young fathers learn how to support their children and promote a healthy and happy life for their sons and daughters. Individuals and couples who seek to improve their parenting skills can do so in one of the parenting education classes offered by the Urban League of Rochester. These classes focus on a variety of topics, including positive parenting strategies, age-appropriate expectations for children, and child development issues. These classes are held on a weekly basis and include both an educational component as well as time for parents to practice skills through role-play situations. Various support services for Rochester's youth are available through the Community Place of Greater Rochester. This organization is committed to providing support and guidance for children as they navigate obstacles in school and life. From their foster grandparent program that pairs at-risk children with a caring, supportive older adult mentor, to disability services that help families meet the unique needs of their disabled child, to programs that facilitate personal and social development, the Community Place promotes the stability and resiliency of children and young adults. Family Services and Assistance Programs
The Monroe County Department of Human Services seeks to assist Rochester families in obtaining the support they require to have the highest quality of life possible. From emergency financial assistance to foster care programs to advocacy services for the city's elderly residents, the department offers something to meet the need of each member of the family. The agency's Office of Mental Health oversees various programs to help families overcome the impacts of alcohol and drug use, while the Child and Family Services Division works to protect children and older adults from abuse and neglect.
