A Mission for Michael is a group of dedicated healthcare professionals whose mission is to provide hope, healing and the most effective treatment for individuals and their family members who suffer from a dual diagnoses: chemical dependency and co-occurring mental illness.
What We Do
A Mission for Michael offers programs specifically designed for people with co-occurring disorders. We help each individual build a foundation that will ensure lifestyle changes to dramatically reduce the chance of relapse and to stabilize their mental illness.
About Dr. Granese
Dr. Richard Granese, M.D., M.B.A, is a Board Certified Psychiatrist who also holds a Master’s in Business Administration. Dr. Granese has a private medical practice treating those diagnosed with severe psychiatric disorders. Dr. Granese has also been a consultant for many drug and alcohol treatment programs and saw the need for a full-time Psychiatrist to treat the patients suffering from mental illness, including Bi-polar disease, Schizophrenia and/or Schizo-affective Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder coupled with chemical dependency.
Dr. Granese, as Medical Director of A Mission for Michael, Inc. is not just a consultant but actually oversees the treatment of each patient on a daily basis and is always available 24 hours per day should any medical or psychiatric emergency arise. Dr. Granese is the Chief of Psychiatry at two local Hospitals and has been practicing for 14 years.

Drew Fisher, CADC-II – Program Director
Drew Fisher has completed his education as a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor Level 2 (CADC-II) via the California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and has many years experience in direct patient care with several recovery programs. Drew has also overseen a multiple-residence sober living program in South Orange County for the last several years. Helping others achieve and maintain sobriety is Drew’s life work. He has had extraordinary life experiences that have placed him in a unique position to help addicts in a way that no one else can. Drew believes in changing the family dynamic for optimal healing. He believes in one-to-one therapy for the individual and the family for the best outcome. Even though most of Drew’s time is spent at A Mission for Michael, Inc., he has many other activities that he participates in. He is an avid, passionate surfer who has traveled the world and he loves sharing his love of the ocean with others. If he’s not at “The Mission”, he’s in the water!
Brian F. Licuanan, M.S., Ph.D.
Dr. Licuanan received an M.A. in Psychology from Pepperdine University as well as an M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oklahoma. He completed his doctoral internship at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Licuanan has extensive experience treating individual adults and adolescents, couples, and groups presenting with a wide-range of concerns including depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, ADHD, and eating disorders. He also specializes in treating sleep problems using Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia and is working towards a certification in Behavioral Sleep Medicine. Dr. Licuanan employs an integrative approach to therapy drawing mainly from Cognitive-Behavioral and Psychodynamic therapeutic approaches. Dr. Licuanan facilitates both in-patient and out-patient groups 3-4 times per week at A Mission for Michael, Inc. and sees the clients for individual sessions weekly while also serving as one of the treatment team’s psychologists. Additionally, he treats private practice patients and is chief psychologist for a psychiatric medical group and lead facilitator for a family solutions group for the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) in South Orange County.
Martin "Doc" Pennington, Psy.D.
Dr. Pennington has over 30 years of clinical experience. He is a graduate of Boston University, Boston College, International College and Ryokan College. He holds a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology and has also completed additional training at the Cambridge Institute, Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic and Hahnemann Medical College. He is a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and has spent the past 16 years working in drug and alcohol treatment. Doc sees our patients individually and also runs Recovery and Mental Illness process and education groups. His personal qualities of honesty, assertiveness, spirituality and consistent positive outlook have gained him tremendous respect among his colleagues and peers at A Mission for Michael, Inc.
Ann Watanabe, M.A., MFTi
Ann received her Master of Arts in Marital and Family Therapy from Alliant International University in 2011. While in graduate school, Ann demonstrated her dedication and enthusiasm for the field as she earned the 2011 Student of the Year Award of her graduating cohort recognizing her clinical skills, professionalism and academic achievement working with diverse populations. Her experience includes providing therapy at a school for adolescents in the juvenile justice system and working at a residential and outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation facility. She has extensive experience working with adolescents, adults, couples, and families in both individual and group settings. Ann is a Primary Therapist at A Mission for Michael, Inc. and also facilitates a portion of the Family Program.
Terrence Kelleman, M.S., LAADC
Terrence John Kelleman holds a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, and is a Licensed, Advanced Chemical Dependency Counselor, BRI- II, Board Registered Interventionist and a Certified International Chemical Dependency Counselor and Clinical Supervisor. Terrence has extensive experience in adolescent and adult substance abuse treatment. His expertise involves his work with chronic “hard addiction cases”, relapse prevention, transitional and family care. His experience with addiction counseling began over 25 years ago, with a personal knowledge of chemical dependency as an illness and firsthand experience in recovery which enables him to relate to people with addiction problems regardless of age or background. Setting a precedent in his approach to intervention and addiction therapy Terrence is the conduit to recovery for his clients and their family members. His dedication to his life’s work has provided a safe haven to those who need support and direction during an extremely difficult period of their lives.

Laura Huff, MPAS, PA-C
Laura has been a Physician’s Assistant with A Mission for Michael, Inc. since the founding in October of 2011. Laura practices inpatient and outpatient medicine collaboratively with her Supervising Physician, Dr. Richard Granese. She graduated with a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from Jefferson College of Health Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Roanoke College. Laura’s warm personality and professionalism bring a wonderful dynamic to the psychiatric care provided at A Mission for Michael, Inc. Laura assists Dr. Granese in prescribing, 1:1 patient appointments and long-term patient aftercare.
Dan Robinson, CATC-III, Case Manager
Dan is a Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor III under The Addiction Counselor Certification Board of California and a registered member of the California Association of Alcohol/Drug Educators. Dan also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in American Studies from California State University, Fullerton. He has been a Senior Counselor and Case Manager at many prominent treatment centers in Southern California before he came to A Mission for Michael, Inc. in July of 2013. Dan brings over 15 years of professional experience in management of people and major projects. His leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills allows him to manage complex patient and family cases, support staff and contribute to the high quality, direct patient care environment at A Mission for Michael, Inc. Dan is a highly qualified counselor who exudes trustworthiness and safety – these unique character traits elicit results when working individually with highly traumatized and often dually diagnosed patients.
