Dana Point is a quaint beach town that nestles up to it's neighbor Capistrano Beach. With a population of 34.048 the median age of residence is 44 which is close to the California median age of 45. With only roughly just under a thousand less males than females and a median income to 79,000.1

Mental Health in Dana Point

Dana Point is a picturesque region of southern Orange County, but is underdeveloped in its social services. Approximately 50% of citizens in the region seeking mental health services do not receive them. The population of Dana Point has been recognized as a Medically Underserved Population (MUP).2 Areas similar to Dana Point, with large low income populations, cultural and linguistic minorities, and economic inequity are eligible for the MUP designation. Largely due to these income barriers and cultural conflict, Dana Point�s population has faced many mental health problems. Approximately 3.8% of the population of Orange County claim that their emotions impact their life and happiness.3 Extreme social life detriment is experienced by 4.7% of adults and 3.3% believe that their careers and jobs suffer the consequences of their psychological impairment.

Current Initiatives

There have been initiatives taken by the people of Orange County. Various services such as counseling and outdoor behavioral programs are being provided to the patients. The League of Woman sponsors an educational public forum on mental health with a panel of speakers. With the help of many medical students, doctors, and researchers, prevention techniques have been outlined and made accessible to the community.4 Efforts have also been made by scientists in hospitals around the country to further comprehend the mechanism of psychological disorders; the results of which will be made public to residents of the Orange County in the near future.5
