Mental Health in Rapid City

Individuals and families that have been impacted by autism spectrum disorders, Asperger's, and Pervasive Development Disorders can find resources and support through the Autism Society of the Black Hills. This organization provides educational programs and classes for children as well as adults that focus on improving communication and social skills. Groups offer encouragement to people with autism and provide much needed social support. The Black Hills Center for Equality works to promote the health and wellness of residents in the LGBT community. Advocacy efforts seek to inform the public of important LGBT issues and promote equality for all. To meet the mental health needs of LBGT citizens, the center provides a free 24-hour hotline. Residents struggling with depression, anxiety, prejudice, or any other issue with which they need assistance can call 605-348-3244.3

The behavioral health programs offered by the Indian Health Service seek to address issues that interfere with the mental health of Native American residents in Rapid City. The agency focuses particularly on substance use intervention and treatment programs to raise awareness of the dangers that alcohol and other drugs present to health and wellness. The Indian Health Service also offers crisis response programs for individuals that experience a mental health emergency. Services for tribal members are offered free of charge. Current Initiatives

The Ateyapi Identity Monitoring Initiative is a program that seeks to reduce risky behaviors among American Indian youth in the Rapid City area. Using culturally sensitive methods, the initiative aims to improve the self-esteem and self-efficacy of youth through activities that build resiliency and provide coping skills to overcome the effects of poverty. Children learn self-management skills, gain cultural and self-awareness, and learn how to make positive and safe choices that enhance their wellbeing.
