My Focus

Our life is filled with choices, worries, and wonder about the past, the future, and occasionally the present.  Sometimes we are on a constant journey to find who we are.  We look to the outside wanting more for ourselves, attempting to fill voids that have been left by unexplained experiences.

My life and passion have been dedicated to becoming an expert in trauma treatment. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma as a child.  Some common traumas that can affect kids, teens, couples, families and individuals include:

Sexual Abuse

High Conflict Parental Relationships

Domestic Violence

Car Accidents

Medical Illnesses

Loss of a Child

“Freak” accidents

Community Violence

Parental/Family Drug and Substance Abuse

History of Foster Placement

Removal of Children from the Home

Department of Children and Family Services Involvement

Loss of a Job

I have seen hundreds of children, teens, couples, and families and am experienced in working with different dynamics that may be at play.

My Approach

As a survivor of trauma, I know talking about trauma can be one of the scariest experiences that you have.  Often, our bodies and brains do an excellent job at keeping us functioning despite the life-threatening circumstances that we have survived.  For me, your own skills are a big part of treatment.  I focus and build on skills you have with skills that can enhance how you manage your experience of trauma.  Then, I begin to systematically work on feeling identification, and promotion of the ability to verbally or physically communicate feelings.

In later stages of therapy, once you and I both see that you are ready (maybe 10 sessions into treatment), I will begin systematically working with you to identify traumatic events that are at the root of your symptoms (whether it be in individual, in the family, or with a couple) through something called narrative therapy.  During this time, I integrate focused narrative therapy to increase the distance between you and your experiences.  During the narrative therapy, I will also work to identify themes, choices, and thought errors that contribute to your experience of trauma and its repetitive show in your daily life.

The end of treatment is focused on relapses.  I believe it is not only important to reduce symptoms and build meaning in the present moment- but it is paramount to prepare for times when the trauma comes back into your life.  Being prepared for its return can help you feel empowered, and go directly to your own skill set to regain control.

I use a time-limited approach which helps my clients to see that there is an end goal of treatment.  I work with each individual client/family to discuss treatment planning and length of treatment. Typically, treatment ranges from 3 to 6 months and for children, ranges from about 4 to 6 months.
