Addiction is often talked about in terms of a disease. Therefore, no real positive change is likely to occur without treatment. In my professional experience, most people develop an addiction as a means to cope with an entirely different problem. I believe addiction therapy then, is less about the problem behavior, and more about treating the original issue. For example, a person may drink or use drugs to numb the painful feelings of the abuse they encountered as a child.
