Clients can benefit from anger management counseling by understanding stress and the negative effects it brings. Learning to control anger leads to better decision making. In my sessions, I help people undertand the difference between being assertive vs. aversive. This benefits clients by learning better communication in addition to less conflict in their lives.
Michael Stoller, LCSW
Anger and anger management are common themes with the clientele I see. I view anger as one of five core emotions that everyone needs to express for psychological health. Unfortunately, there is often no safe place for my clients to express anger in their lives. As a result, it comes out at inappropriate times and is directed at the people they love. My approach to anger management is to help my clients get in touch with the core of their anger and provide a safe and appropriate outlet for them to express their anger verbally and physically. This can often be a long process but to heal the unresolved wounds that are often the cause, it is worth it.

In dealing with anger management, I do not simply try to focus on counting to 10 and other superficial control mechanisms. Instead, I try to help the individual to learn to deal more effectively with the underlying causes of the anger. Anger is a defensive response to perceived threat. Thus, I help the individual to uncover, recognize and deal more effectively with the perceived threat - perceived loss of love and respect from a loved one is the most common threat. We all feel hurt when we perceive that our loved one feels or thinks less of us.
Mark MacDonald, LCSW
There are many reasons that people struggle with anger, many of which are brain-related. Anger is often associated with impulsiveness or obsessive thinking. Let's rule out addictive behavior, or address your addictions if necessary. Then, let's work together. I'll offer my knowledge and twenty-five years of experience and you bring your motivation and willingness to work honestly. You and your loved ones will be pleased with the results.

Anger in and of itself is not bad; it CAN be healthy. What is important is HOW anger is handled in a relationship. Do you lose your temper? Does your anger prompt you to say things you do not mean? It is critical for your relationship's success to manage anger. I use research-based skills that will help you not only control your emotions, but also increase productive conflict resolution and relationship satisfaction.

Our world is frustrating. We don't have the garden anymore ... and we so long for that original place that God formed for us perfectly. Meanwhile, while we are on the earth, we have to deal with the frustrations of life in a fallen and imperfect world. I work very specifically to encourage my clients to be more fully equipped to walk through the frustrations of this life from a Christian perspective, Biblical worldview and taking advantage of the strong benefits of psychology as well. Please feel free to read more about me at www.foundationcounseling.com.

Anger is a complex behavior. There is usually at least one trigger that sets it off--and sets you off. But there are also many factors that contribute to it, such as being raised in a home where emotions were not recognized or accepted (you were taught to "stuff it," being a person who focuses on people and tasks outside yourself (being "type A"), and having a physiological tendency towards fight rather than flight.

Anger is usually a symptom of something deeper going on in a person's life. It is my focus to help my clients look at what triggers their anger responses, how to manage these triggers more successfully, and to assist them in practicing more appropriate responses to situations where otherwise they would have reacted inappropriately. We will work through the anger process to identify the truer emotions that lie beneath the surface.

I've seen many clients over the years with anger management issues. Men require a therapist's sensitivity to the issues they use anger to deal with. Learning the practical skills to deal with anger and understanding the issues of entitlement, humiliation, control, and fear that often provoke rage or it's opposite, suppressing, internalizing it, is my goal in working with clients through individual and couple's counseling.
I see many couples where their anger with each other contaminates possibilities of working on common issues so I work with couples to disentangle their disruptive, sometimes abusive communications through a combination of individual and couple's counseling.

The Bible speaks of healthy anger (Jesus demonstrated a righteous anger), but there is also anger that is not healthy and is, plainly, sinful in its effects. Most anger issues are rooted in childhood experiences that have never been resolved and there are people and situations that can trigger responses from the post. If you have anger issues, I can help you explore their origin and help you come up with a plan for managing your emotions in a God-pleasing manner.

Anger is a normal human emotion that we all experience. The way we express anger can be what distinguishes us as being good partners, parents, co-workers, employees, employers or children. Anger is generally a surface emotion. Beneath it lies another strong emotion, usually sadness, hurt or fear. In our efforts to protect ourselves from being vulnerable we often act out in anger, which generally takes us farther away from our true goals. In my work with you I will help you understand your anger in a different way and provide you with techniques and coping skills to manage this strong emotion moving you closer to your ultimate goals.
Tracy Cannizzo, LCSW, CADC

Anger management is an important skill to master in our ever changing world, which brings increasing amounts of stress into our lives. I would utilize two tools: discussing an individual's background to discover possible causes for the behavior, and teaching positive approaches toward stressors. I have assisted both individuals and couples with anger management issues.
Roberta Vondrak, MA, LCPC, CADC
I assist clients with both cognitive behavioral and insight oriented therapy to understand the roots of their anger, how anger is a secondary emotion, and various techniques and skills to effectively manage their anger by directing it in positive ways, rather than either "stuffing" it or "acting out." Often as clients increase their self awareness, they are able to effectively change their responses in situations and relationships that help them be more proactive in handling their anger.

Anger provides information about what we think/feel is being threatened, and it provides the energy to act on that information. Since we are wired to become angry WHEN appropriate, only the misuse of anger is a problem. However, anger often hijacks our thinking which then compounds the orginal problem. When helping clients develop improved anger management skills, I help them understand the elements of our emotional-physical anger response and learn to diffuse them and effectively use the information and energy that anger provides.
Mary Lynn Meyers, LCSW
Learning how to manage and reduce reactivity caused by anger is one of the most important and useful tools we can learn. I integrate mindfulness practice into my anger management therapy to assist clients to begin to interrupt the automatic reactions and explosions that get them into trouble. It is also very useful to explore what is under the anger, as anger is typically an automatic reaction that clouds over a mixture of many other powerful, yet hidden emotions (sadness, loss, grief, guilt, etc.).
