Experiencing feelings of restlessness, fatigue, irritability, constant fear and negative anticipation about the future are too often the outcomes of high levels of stress. Anxiety disorders can have different causes and triggers, as well as different effects on individuals. These symptoms can be managed or eliminated through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness practice and various other coping mechanisms -- frequently without medication.
Anxiety can also run in families which can be treated by the methods noted above.

There are many type of anxiety disorders, with both common and unique symptoms. Anxiety can be brought on by a single stressful event or chronic difficult life experiences. Some of us are more prone to anxiety by our natural temperament and studies a family history in some cases. Treating anxiety starts with a thorough assessment to accurately diagnose and treat. Treatment is tailored to address you specific symptoms and usually involves cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medications. As a RN and therapist, I can assist with both assessment and treatment- in addition to medication management if needed. They symptoms of anxiety can be very dificult but the good news is that treatment works.

My approach to managing anxiety is twofold. I first evaluate your situation & understand the external factors that impact you. Next we design and implement a plan to address those factors. Skills like assertiveness, and limit setting may be used to deal with the external stressors. The second thing we do is increase your coping skills. We can use specific behavioral plans, changing self-talk, letting go, and using social supports to increase your resiliency. Stress reduction methods such as meditation, exercise, spiritual resources, and breathing exercises may be used. With time and some effort, you will find that your self-doubt and anxiety will be replaced will confidence & self-esteem.

With any concerns related to excessive worrying, feelings of anxiety, or intense fears, it may be important to clarify possible reasons why this continues to happen. Anxiety can be seen in very specific settings (e.g., school anxiety) or across broad areas of life, and psychological assessment and neurocognitive testing with Dr. Egli is used to identify possible difficulties and clarify disorders and disabilities.

Anxiety/Stress can be so debilitating for many of us and it's something we will always have to deal with. As we look at ways we've learned to cope, we may find that we haven't managed our stress or anxiety very well. Ways of dealing with anxiety, or coping strategies we have used in the past, may have worked well. But at some point, many of us find that those coping strategies don't work very well any more. Come in and learn new strategies, address the issues that elevate our anxiety and stress and feel more confident as you move forward in life.

Anxiety and stress are unavoidable in life. I'll help you learn how to manage them so they don't feel overwhelming. Some people are genetically "wired" to be more anxious or vulnerable to stress. Loss and trauma can also contribute to a heightened state of anxiety. Understanding the sources of your anxiety and stress, and practicing behaviors that connect you with your internal sense of well-being will allow you to live with anxiety rather than be controlled by it.

We live in a world that has moved to being too fast, too loud and too heavily focused on reaching some form of mythical prize or understanding. I believe we would do well to slow down and listen to ourselves more closely. I work with my clients to find a pace more along these lines, find ways to comfort themselves and thereby be less stressed and anxious.
Paul Dousi, Phd, LMFT
I know a lot about anxiety. A great deal of what I know is because of what I have experienced personally. As a result of my personal experience I have a great deal of passion about helping others. I have also learned a great deal about what goes on in one's thinking, behavior and emotions as a result of anxiety. I know there is hope and I can teach this to you. I will teach you about the neurophysiological underpinnings of anxiety and how the brain can actually be "rewired" by distinct changes in how one approaches one's thinking, behavior in day-to-day situations. I give practical homework that will help you get relief and likely even from the first session.

A little bit of anxiety and stress can lead to enhanced performance. Too much and it hinders performance, negatively affects sleep, decreases concentration and can adversely affect relationships as well. While medications might be needed in some circumstances to reduce anxiety, they have side effects. I treat stress & anxiety using cognitive-behavioral therapy, hypnosis, relaxation training and with homework in the areas of physical exercise, meditation or yoga, and structured exercises for worry. I have a very high success rate with anxious clients and I can help you too.
