We do not treat children as a whole. However parenting issues can impact marriages so they are often addressed in martial counseling. We have had success in providing effective help for parents struggling with conflcting parenting styles, as well as helping children find effective coping methods for difficulties. We believe it is important to provide skills to the parent to help the child and provide healthy lifestyle choices as a foundation for young children's mental health.

I can work with children who are verbal from 6 or 7 and up. I can also treat them with EMDR. When I work with a young child, I insist that the parents see me seperately at least once to get a feel for the dynamics of the family and if there have been any losses, or traumas in the family. Having rased children myself I know how to help children feel "safe"and comfortable with me.

My experience in working with children through behavioral health hospitals, residential facilities, therapeutic day schools, and private practice groups helps me work with young children and the issues they may be facing. Everything from childhood trauma, abuse, ADD/ADHD, school issues, behavioral and emotional issues to coping with divorce, often bring my younger clients to my office. I work with the child through play therapy to help give my young clients a voice. In addition to working with youth, I also work with their families to make sure that there is a clear form of communication and assistance coming from all sides to help the child cope with whatever has brought them to counseling.

I do most of my work with adolescents and teenagers but will occasionally work with children as young as 8 years old. I find that I work best with children who are pretty verbal and can maintain a conversation. I will often use video games, sports, movies, music and other media to develop a relationship with children. Having young children of my own often assists me to relate to what the child is going through and also connect with their parents.

Children face many challenges today that can seem overwhelming. Often they have difficulty expressing their feelings properly and/or managing their behavior. As a family specialist, I employ a variety of child-friendly strategies to help children learn how to confront their challenges and exercise control over their thoughts, feelings and behavior. I am a contributing author on the subject of play therapy in two clinical books and have a playroom filled with puppets, arts, sand tray, an imaginative games that provide a means for children to engage in counseling as a positive experience.
