I realize that children go through many life stresses and challenges. They face divorce, blended families, peer pressure , bullying, death, illness, and sometimes genetic problems with ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, and Tourette Syndrome. For young children who many times have trouble putting their thoughts and feelings into words, play therapy is utilized. For the older child we incorporate talk therapy. Your participation will be an important part of helping your child. Counseling sessions that are separate from your child will help to understand what is happening at home, to measure your childs progress, and to make suggestions to help you. Family therapy is provided when appropriate.

Many times, child therapists overdo the family system in their quest to seek effective solutions for emotional, learning or behavioral concerns with young children. And many times doctors overpathologize issues that shouldn’t be medicated necessarily. This leaves parents wondering what is the best route for their child? Introducing brainwave optimization technology. A fast, effective, natural, and less expensive way to allow your child's brain to make the optimizing changes it desires to make---on its own! Without any external force, opinion, medication, diagnostic, etc. Contact kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or 877-606-6161.

Children may be included in marital or in family therapy, if desired, because parenting issues can impact marriages. We have had success in providing effective help for parents struggling with conflicting parenting styles, as well as helping children find effective coping methods for depression, anxiety, self-esteem, shyness, etc. It is important to provide skills to the parent to help the child and provide healthy lifestyle choices as a foundation for young children's mental health. An individual child can be treated if the parents are also available to be included in the treatment at some level.

I can work with children who are verbal from 6 or 7 and up. I can also treat them with EMDR. When I work with a young child, I insist that the parents see me seperately at least once to get a feel for the dynamics of the family and if there have been any losses, or traumas in the family. Having rased children myself I know how to help children feel "safe"and comfortable with me.

Children face many challenges today that can seem overwhelming. Often they have difficulty expressing their feelings properly and/or managing their behavior. As a family specialist, I employ a variety of child-friendly strategies to help children learn how to confront their challenges and exercise control over their thoughts, feelings and behavior. I am a contributing author on the subject of play therapy in two clinical books and have a playroom filled with puppets, arts, sand tray, an imaginative games that provide a means for children to engage in counseling as a positive experience.

I consider working with kids one of my specialities. As a former school counselor, I understand the varied considerations that go into supporting and empowering kids to becoming their best selves. My passion is teaching kids self-regulation skills, supporting them through change and transition (i.e. divorce, relocation, new school, new sibling, etc.), and self esteem building. This year, I published my first children's book, which is a story that I integrate into our work. The skills taught in the book reflect ways that kids can identify and soften anxiety and worry, and learn how to take good care of themselves in their inner world.

Like the rest of us, sometimes children are confused, anxious, angry or frightened. The grieving child often struggles to understand the magnitude of his or her emotions. Verbally asking for help is hard, as children more readily communicate through behavior and play. Play therapy is a technique I use to help children gain better understanding of their world. Through play, we build a relationship, enhance coping skills, explore experiences, and ultimately reach a place where the child can utilize strengths to handle changes in life and to fully enjoy childhood.

Does your child often act out and refuse to listen? Is he or she typically moody and upset? I am a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience and board certification to assist with children’s issues, like defiance, anxiety, attention problems, depression, adjustment to family transitions, social rejection, bedwetting and toileting difficulties, and parent/child conflicts.
