Couples come to me for help with a wide range of questions and issues - it could be for some pre-marital counseling, for resolving specific issues in their relationship or other people in the extended family, or help in working through a separation and divorce. Many times, the issue is infidelity. I help couples assess whether the relationship can survive the affair, and then provide support in doing that if they decide to stay together. Other times, there are questions about intimacy, usually sexual intimacy. I can help couples communicate more effectively regarding their sexual needs, and provide the education and support to help make this a vibrant and wonderful part of their lives.

Couples Counselor

Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Marriage-Family Therapist

Location: 8460 Montgomery Court, Eden Prairie
Fast Contact: Email or Call Dr. McCarthy.

Dr. McCarthy's approach of "Co–Coaching for Dynamic Growth" challenges many currently accepted beliefs about love/romance and what it takes to have a successful relationship: e.g. “you should just accept your partner and not try to change their behavior.” Rather, the relationship is seen as a dynamic growth process for learning how to become more loving partners through mutual coaching. Each partner seeks to clearly identify his or her own core negative relationship pattern and each helps the other change through mutual, respectful coaching. Couples previously unable to break longstanding recurring patterns learn to revitalize a new relationship of deep love and emotional connection!

Sometimes couples feel as if their relationship is not going the way they would like. Physical and emotional intimacy may be suffering leaving people feel as if they are not belonging as much as they would like. Or differences in opinion about certain topics or values leave couples feeling like they can’t find a way to get through their differences. Couples often need a safe place to express what they are feeling in the relationship in order to be heard and maximize the benefit of the relationship. It is good to establish this safety in communication with a non-biased party who can help the couple navigate their differences or get their emotional needs met.

Couples counseling may or may not include a married couple. I see dating, premarital and married couples who are of all sexual orientations. Although I prefer to focus on relationship enhancement, I also work with couples who are in the process of separating or transitioning in other ways (e.g., terminal illness, military deployments, etc). Couples whose children are transitioning often benefit greatly from couples work. I also find it very important for divorcing or separating couples with children to seek counseling together in order to reduce the negative impact on the children; divorce counseling can help with closure and help keep things more amicable in an otherwise arduous process
