Depression is one of the most common reasons clients seek help. Depression is an extended version of sadness. When people are sad for several days, they lose interest in their everyday activities, cry, can't sleep or sleep too much. Then the cycle begins. I can help you break that cycle. We can, together, try to understand what is keeping you "stuck."

Depression can be invasive in our lives leading to withdrawal from others, anger, negative feelings towards self and others, trouble concentrating and making decisions, a change in sleeping habits, tearfulness, suicidal thoughts and/or attempts, and overall dissatisfaction with life and feeling unhappy. If you feel this may have taken over your life please call and we can evaluate the depth of your depression. I have two excellent tools that will help you determine the degree of your depression. We can look at the options together on how best to treat it, whether by medication from your physician and counseling or counseling and alternative therapies or just talk therapy alone.

Meds or Therapy? This is the question posed by many as they seek help for treating depression. Studies show that both are equally effective. This is surprising news to most who just assume that meds might be the only route to go. Only taking meds might combat depression, but doesn't get to the root of the problem contributing to the depression Walking with people who move from a sense of complete hopelessness to a sense of hopefulness and stability is a journey I have taken often with many of my clients. Observing the incredible resiliency and tools people have to climb out of depression is powerful. I am also EMDR trained, and this modality can offer rapid relief to depression.

People often think depression is something wrong with them, often though it has more to do with the wrong way people are relating to you. I work from a warm, empathic standpoint in which I try to enter your shoes and understand your experiences as you do, not as others do. Insight is not the main goal (although that certainly happens), rather formative moments of feeling tuned into, deeply understood and emotionally held are the goal. These offer new emotional experiences that really catalyze psychological growth and healing. Benefits include increased: feelings of vitality and realness, hope, self-esteem, emotion regulation, etc.

Depression can be distressful and often times misunderstood or downplayed by others. Understanding that depression is a valid experience can help in taking the first steps to getting help. While medications are certainly valuable in some cases, it's still very important to address the underlying issues that may be also contributing to the depression. With our busy lifestyles, depression is on the rise. It's roughly ten times higher today than it was just two generations ago. Together we will assess your present and past experiences and formulate a plan to help you better understand what you are experiencing, what you can do about it and how to feel better.

Depression is felt by everyone at one time or another; however, if you are living under the cloud of depression, counseling will help you to discover new truths. Negative thoughts are often the result of the inablity to see truth. Cognitive Behavior therapy is used in session to help clients to change negative thought patters. Narrative therapy is also used with clients suffering from depression.
