I treat depression using an eclectic approach, however primarily use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is an evidenced-based approach, that assists in identifying and changing negative beliefs, which contribute to maladaptive feelings and behaviors. During treatment we will also work on creating healthier behaviors including improved self-care (balanced eating, exercise, healthy coping strategies), which when neglected can make us vulnerable to our emotions. I am also trained in EMDR, which is helpful in treating depression that is related to past trauma.

I have worked with individuals who battle with depression on a daily basis. I will help clients work through their feelings of depression as well as help the client move forward with their goals in life. If necessary, I will help clients gain practical tools to function on the workplace and in the family. I am a Christian counselor who incorporates hope, self-forgiveness and true healing into my practice.

Just like anger depression is your body's way of saying something is wrong. Many say depression it is anger turned inward. My idea is that depression is telling you to take care of yourself, rest, slow down, cocoon, look inward, cry. Wouldn't it be a gift to allow these things to take place in your body and soul? Though many people fight depression or judge depressed people as just lazy or unmotivated. How different would it be if we learned to honor depression and work through it and not against it?
Jessica Whizin, MA
Depression can manifest itself in many different ways. It takes a strong person to understand that they need help in finding out what is going on inside. Depression should not be looked at as a negative. Many people suffer from depression and getting tools to work through the depression is an important part of healing. Another part of the work involves getting to know yourself and what is behind the depression.

Depression must be evaluated from a biological, cognitive, emotional and spiritual perspective. It is often an opportunity to resolve dysfunctional messages from the past and gain self control for transformational growth in the present. Both cognitive therapy and interpersonal therapy is very effective for treatment. From a spiritual perspective, I view depression as a calling to go deeper with Christ for reconciliation and redemptive purposes.
David Ragsdale, MA, LPC
Through Cognitive-Behavioral therapy I help clients learn to identify and counter the automatic negative thoughts that underly situational and depressive disorders. New behaviors are put into motion that enable a sense of personal mastery and appropriate self esteem. Trauma, family of origin and generational issues are often explored to understand historical roots of a depression. I also utilize Narrative therapy and EMDR to nurture a new story of hope, a better sense of self and a compelling vision of the future.

If you are living with depression, you know how painful it can be and what a challenge it is. Although you may feel emotionally weepy and sad, depression actually involves the suppression of feelings. My combination therapy approach gives you effective cognitive resources that enable you to establish new, more satisfying life patterns while using powerful techniques that get to the roots of your emotional difficulties. You learn to identify and change distorted ways of thinking about yourself while resolving denied feelings and subconscious beliefs that have blocked your true happiness. You can then experience greater self-confidence and a more joyful life

When life gets you down and you feel like you can't go on. What can you do? It takes so much energy to just get out of bed how will you ever feel happy? Stuck in the muck. Drowning in dreary living. The future looks dull and there is no end in sight. Learn to connect to your heart's desire and begin to dream about what really matters to you. By clarifying your values and then working on a plan on how to bring those values to life is part of therapy. Knowing you are living for a purpose can add a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction to your life. I can teach you new skills to help you connect to your dreams. Once, you are clear about your dreams you can make a plan to have them come true.
