Human beings develop habits, and rituals, and addictions to cope with stresses and trauma and emotional pain in living. We compulsively seek to be in control and relieve our tension. A part of the “old brain,” or our primitive defenses, may compensate for emotional pain by prompting us to eat too much, or not enough, or by binging and purging.
