An eating disorder may be inner turmoil manifesting itself in outer appearance. Are you an emotional eater? Or do you deprive yourself of food? Perhaps you binge and purge? Chew and spit? All of these symptoms of an eating disorder. All can cause serious physical health problems. As if that's not enough, there is often a feeling of shame and isolation associated with your eating disorder, and you feel as though you can't talk about it. If you're reading this now, you're on the right track. It is okay to talk about it. In fact, contact me and we'll set up a free thirty minute consult to see if I'm the right person to help you find the right strategies and provide support as you change.
David Ransen, Ph.D., MFT
Very often, eating disorders result from a person's dissatisfaction with the appearance of his or her body. Based on my experience and on overwhelming research results, this dissatisfaction comes from society's message, which we get from ads and celebrities, that certain body types (usually very thin) are beautiful and sexy. Unfortunately, most of us don't even realize that our perceptions have been so effectively manipulated in these ways. The idea that extremely thin bodies are desirable is handed down to us whether we want it or not. I have learned that people make much more sensible choices once they learn how they are being manipulated, and once they can make their own choices freely.

When my parents went out, I waited until the car was down the street - then I raided the refrigerator. WOW. That seemed to work. That actually soothed my pain. But I got really fat. Then there was a new kind of pain.
I went to OA. It didn't help. I took diet pills. Short term benefit - although I could stay up all night and do my homework! Then in college, I sold the diet pills. It paid for my books. But there wasn't a day I didn't think about my weight.
I always struggled with food - especially bagels.... (NY bagels) and pizza.... (NY pizza).
Maybe I should've just moved!!
I'm in pretty good shape now. But the struggle continues..... to a MUCH lesser degree.
Now, I love me.

Eating disordered clients are usually disconnected from their bodies. This disconnection is an external expression of their internal process. Our job is to address the underlying feelings of powerlessness that often results from trauma or an unrealistic expectations coming from the family system or within the client. If a higher level of care is needed, then a careful referral will be made to a program so the disordered eating symptoms can be resolved and the client can return to outpatient therapy.
