My main emphasis in family therapy is for me to avoid ‘labeling’ clients with diagnostic/psychiatric names. Labels does not promote healing but yields potential ‘pathologizing effects,’ for example, calling blaming/labeling my client as a ‘drug addict.’ Instead, I help families to heal their relationships. My approach is not to encourage criticism/blaming on one or more family members as the causer of ‘dysfunction’ in their relationships—instead I ask how they feel about their concerns and what they see/believes to be the problem/issue in their families. Because of my approach, one client reported that she felt there was no further need to become critical of her partner.
