Grief counseling helps people cope with grief and mourning following the loss of a loved one or due to major life changes that trigger feelings of grief (i.e. job loss or divorce). It provides a space for individuals to work through and process the complex emotions surrounding loss. Healthy grieving results in remembering the loss with a newfound sense of peace, rather than searing pain.

My approach towards grief and loss depends on where my client is at within their process. I take into consideration the five stages of grief (i.e., denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). I also utilize the power of words and how we can together co-create a narrative representative of your new reality. This is a process, but with time I believe the creation of a narrative yields autonomy and empowerment.

Grief and Loss is a very common contributor to increased substance use. As a substance use counselor, my goal is to help people moderate or stop their use of substances so that they can process their grief and loss in healthy ways. We work through processing grief and loss through meeting people where they are at in the grief process opposed to pushing or pulling them into a place where they are not ready to go. This means that we use a compassionate approach combined with tools and strategies to support movement through the grief process and to create closure and movement forward that honors the loss.
