Psychotherapy is a special opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings, and goals with a professional who is non-judgmental yet circumspect and experienced in helping you to better understand yourself. But understanding is not enough, as we well know. In psychotherapy, you will be encouraged and supported in applying your understanding: in trying new behaviors, in gently expanding your "comfort zone," in bringing some personal goals that previously may have felt "far-fetched" within reach. While much of my practice centers around brief therapies sometimes we have to understand, process, and come to terms with the past before we can move on in the present. This is where psychotherapy can be useful. Often clients will come in either angry with their families of origin or guilt ridden because they love their family of origin but are struggling with the effects poor family boundaries or volatile environments. It is possible to look in the past, digest what happened and finding peace while respectfully seeing your caregivers as fallible human beings. Psychotherapy is a longer term form of therapy which frames the present as a function of past experiences.
