With a population of over 65,000 people, San Clemente is a vibrant Orange County city and community. It is located halfway between San Diego and Los Angeles, right along the coastline. Because of its beautiful location it is a prime place for individuals and families who love the beach and the ocean. A long history of surfing and water sports can be found in San Clemente. Many have considered this area the surfing capital of the United States. The Capistrano Rock and Mineral Club hold monthly activities and plenty of field trips. The Cabrillo Playhouse has been dedicated to Theater in San Clemente for several decades.1

Mental Health in San Clemente

Orange County residents rank mental health care as the most significant health need in the county, above the need for substance abuse services and concern about domestic violence. Only about one-third of county residents who need mental health treatment receive services, leaving two-thirds to live without the proper care they need to function at their best. Poor mental health leads to other problems, including substance abuse and poor physical health.2 As a result, the impact of lack of access to health care creates a trickle down effect and causes many more problems for individuals in Orange County.

The Community Resource Center San Clemente (CRCSC) was established in 2010 to serve as a coordinating agency for the improvement of public programs and services for San Clemente residents. CRCSC offers support groups for a number of common mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and abuse. For those struggling with addiction, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held at the facility. Education and outreach programs are also available in a variety of areas, including parenting tips and wellness courses. For more information about CRCSC, call 949-303-0353.3

Current Initiatives

In order to address some of the pervasive housing needs of San Clemente residents, the city has proposed several initiatives to accommodate low-income and homeless individuals. To accomplish this, the city will coordinate activities between private and public agencies to foster the development of housing improvements and resident initiatives. Particular focus will be on developing and maintaining affordable housing. Several programs, including Section 108 loans, federal rental assistance and tax credits are available to make housing more accessible and affordable.4
