We want connection- a space to be vulnerable and truly seen. But emotional intimacy is risky, and that scares us, especially with a difficult history! Instead of being vulnerable, we build up walls to protect us. Let's break down the walls and build a loving connection.

The cultural scene in Long Beach includes such places as the Long Beach Museum of Art.  This is the only museum in the western United States that only shows Latin American art.1  There are other museums, such as the University Art Museum that is located on the Long Beach State campus.  Long Beach is also known for its street art, where murals are displayed.  The Anime Expo has hosted some of the largest collections of imported and domestic anime and manga merchandise, including some influential Japanese artists.  The world’s largest mural and in the Guinness Book of Records, is located on the outside of the city Arena. The space it takes up is 116,000 square feet.  The local shops and galleries in the East Village Arts District will hold a monthly art exhibit in the streets.  The arts are very important here, so much so that a portion of the budget is allocated which is administered through the Arts Council.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Long Beach

Of the more than 161,000 homes in Long Beach, over 60 percent are family based. In nearly one third of households, grandparents are the primary care provider. This presents a unique family situation for many citizens of Long Beach.2 Additionally, depression and anxiety rank as two of the most serious health issues facing the city's residents.3 With many uninsured, poor, and otherwise underserved families, the Long Beach mental health community has to fight an uphill battle in order to bring behavioral services to those who most need it.

The myriad of privately funded non-profit agencies that provide behavioral health care to the people of Long Beach rely heavily on the time, dedication, and work of volunteers. For the Child is one such organization that offers a variety of services to children and their families who have undergone abuse or neglect, or do not have access to quality care because of financial circumstances. To sign up as a volunteer, please call 562-422-8472.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Families that need behavioral health services can receive the assistance they require at the Center for Families and Youth. The mission of the center is to enhance family functioning by offering educational courses on communication, life skills, interpersonal skills, and job training. Families learn how to have fun and positive family time. Children and youth learn how to manage stress and anger and parents develop skills to effectively communicate with their children. Call 562-570-3300 for more information about the center's programs and services.5
