Mental Health in Omaha

Nebraska faces a serious shortage of qualified mental health care professionals, especially in rural areas. Of the state's 93 counties, 90 have negligible, if any, mental health providers.2 This means that Nebraska's rural residents do not have the accessible care they require and urban providers of behavioral health services, such as those in Omaha and Lincoln, are heavily burdened. With a significant percentage of the 91,000 Nebraska residents having a mental illness living in the Omaha area, access to care is better, but there still are not enough providers to meet the demand.3

The Kim Foundation, an Omaha-based non-profit agency, is committed to filling the gaps in the availability of quality mental health care in Nebraska. The Foundation is also driven to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Through innovative programs, education, outreach opportunities, and advocacy with local and state governments, the Kim Foundation is making mental health care more accessible and higher quality for Omaha residents. For more information about the Foundation, please call 402-891-6911.4

Some budgeting needed

While counseling can certainly be an expense for individuals and families in Omaha, with proper budgeting, it is entirely do-able and the risk/reward is worth it. For some families, it may be difficult to sustain a commitment to therapy without proper insurance coverage. If this is you, ask your therapist about low cost options as practitoners in and around Omaha may have flexibility or sliding scales. Low cost counseling and affordable therapy are also sometimes offered by listed city and university level clinics, check with your local Omaha public health department.
