I am a Licensed Professional Counselor here in Georgia. I earned a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Newcastle Upon Tyne University, Newcastle, United Kingdom and my Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from City University of Seattle, Bellevue, WA, USA. I chose to become a mental health professional after my children left home. At this point, I have 12 years of practice experience, five years in Hong Kong and seven years in the U.S. I work with individuals, couples, and families.
My approach to counseling is the following:
MY COMMITMENTI believe that life is a scared journey. At times, however, we find it hard to know how to meet life's changes and/or challenges that inevitably come our way. We feel stuck, lost, and not sure which way to turn. I am committed to practicing the kind of counseling that will help you find the right pathway to move forward and bring change in your life that will strengthen you as you proceed on this journey feeling more empowered and integrated.
ALIVE AND PURPOSEFUL COUNSELINGA counseling theorist once said a counselor is someone “with compassionate skill, doing a kind of love work.” That means I take the position that I have a responsible and person-valuing role which can transform counseling into a
worthy process. This gives it life so that it does not remain just so many words—it becomes living and purposeful for both myself as a counselor and you the client.
THE COUNSELING RELATIONSHIPThis is a very important part of the counseling process. As soon as that process is started I work to forge a bond of trust and respect using the skills of empathy, genuineness, and a nonjudgmental attitude. This can help you feel safe enough to open up your heart and move into a much deeper part of yourself so that active, purposeful change can take place. We will build a reciprocal meaning-making effort that is harmonious enough for you to feel this like an anchor and helps to make therapy real. Along with this, you find that I am ethical, professional, and keep good boundaries including confidentiality which provides a solid foundation for the work we do together.
PATHWAYS TO MEANINGFUL CHANGE
I have experience working with a wide range of issues from depression, anxiety, phobias, abuse, grief, and trauma. As I also believe that each person is unique I take an eclectic approach in the helping process so that the therapy can be tailored to your specific needs. We will work together to discover your talents and abilities which can be utilized to help you find the right path to walk forward.
I also work with couples and/or families. It is so important to have that special bond with a partner and in a family to build relationships that are lasting and which can weather life's storms. I can help you recognize what is causing the conflict and unhappy reactions to one another. This will enable you to have a fuller understanding of why you react a certain way to your partner--what emotions are triggered and why, for instance. Recognizing your pattern/s of communication also give direction as to where to go for change and a deeper sense of closeness.
If infidelity has intruded into your relationship you can find help to take you from a place of train wreck to healing and renewal.
