Honolulu is located in Hawaii and definitely has its share of historical, outdoor, and indoor attractions for the entire family. Regardless of age, your children, teenagers, and even adult family members are sure to find entertainment nearby. First, make your way to Pearl Harbor to see the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. Here you will travel back in time and explore the history of this location, proving to be educational for all family members involved. Then make your way down to Hanauma Bay Marine Preserve to enjoy a day in the sun.1 Many people choose this area for snorkeling. Then participate on a Hawaii Food Tour that is sure to leave your taste buds in delight. Afterwards bring your children and teenagers to the city's zoo. This site has an area for petting animals as well as nighttime guided tours to observe nocturnal species. Be sure to end the night by enjoying a family-friendly game at Waialae Bowl or a movie at Ward Stadium 16. Either attraction is geared toward family entertainment and has a concession stand for snacking purposes. Punahou, Kaimuki Christian, and Ala Wai Elementary are a few of the school located nearby for your family's educational needs.

Mental Health in Honolulu

Hawaii is a vastly diverse state in terms of the people who live there. No single ethnic group represents a majority of the population. Caucasians, native Hawaiians and individuals of Japanese descent make up the three largest groups in the state.2 Due to this diversity, counselors and other mental health workers must deliver culturally competent services that take into account each person's unique perspective. Additionally, a 2012 survey found that almost 47% of citizens in Honolulu County reported having poor mental health within the last 30 days.3 Thus, the need for quality mental health care is high.

An essential factor in developing health care services is educating the public about the need for improved services and advocating on behalf of those whose voice cannot be heard. Mental Health America of Hawaii (MHAH) fills that need. MHAH has many educational programs that bring awareness to important issues, such as teen suicide, bullying, elder care, and extended outpatient treatment for the poor. As a non-profit organization, MHAH is always in need of funding and volunteers in order to carry out their mission to improve the wellness of Hawaiians. Those in need of more information about behavioral health services can call MHAH's helpline at 808-521-1846.4

Current Initiatives

Many of Hawaii's residents live in rural and remote areas with little access to mental health care. To address this issue, the Department of Human Services and the Department of Health, Child, and Adolescent Telehealth launched the Rural Health Collaboration/Telepsychiatry Initiative. By using technology to offer health services remotely, mental health workers are able to reach citizens in need of behavioral health care in the most rural parts of the state.5
