Long Beach definitely has the temperatures to bring the people to the beach. The temperatures range from the upper 60s through the mid 80s, with temperatures rising well into the 100s from April to November—however these are the high temperatures, not the normal temperatures.  The ethnic diversity within Long Beach is one of the most diverse in the country.  Long Beach has a history of immigrants from Europe and the Pacific Islands.  Long Beach also has the second largest Cambodian community outside of Asia, which is named ‘Little Phnom Penh.   Otherwise, the demographics of Long Beach consist of Caucasians and Latinos making up the largest ethnic population, with the remainder being African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and other ethnicities.

Long Beach is also one of the places where film making was started in southern California.  The Balboa Studios where 11 acres are used to fill outdoor shots.  Cleopatra was filmed in Long Beach in 1917, and the part where Moses parts the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments, filmed in 1923, was filmed on the shore of Seal Beach, which is southwest of Long Beach.  Even today, because it is so close, the studios continue to use Long Beach during filming.1  There are long stretches of road along the beach that are used for car chase and crash scenes.  Other movies and television shows, such as Speed and Joan of Arcadia have been filmed in area high schools and other places in Long Beach.  In fact, the O.C. was actually filmed in Long Beach rather than Orange County because it was cheaper to produce due to its location.

Mental Health in Long Beach

Long Beach is a racially and ethnically diverse city that has large Asian, African-American, and Hispanic communities. Over 45 percent of Long Beach citizens speak a language other than English at home. Over one fifth of the city's residents live below the poverty line.2 With the prevalence of multiple cultures and the presence of poverty, mental health service providers must take a multicultural and sensitive approach when delivering care.

Mental Health America is a nationwide non-profit organization with a Long Beach-based office that provides an integrated approach to the treatment of mental illness. The center offers programs for recovery, re-entry into the community, employment, housing acquisition, and much more. By focusing treatment on improving all aspects of life, clients gain hope, increase self-responsibility, and feel empowered to make positive change.
