About Lonnie:

Lonnie has been practicing counseling since 2005.  He was born and raised in small town Ohio where he began a first career as a high school teacher.   As an Ohio native, he enjoys rooting for historically flawed sports teams including in order of personal grief, the Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers.  He also enjoys reading fiction and filling his garage with auction treasures only try to unload them later! In 2004, he met a Texan who agreed to marry him and now along with their three children they live in Charlotte.

Practice Focus:

Lonnie works with adults with a special emphasis on meeting the therapy needs of men.  He enjoys engaging men with practical insight on understanding their emotions and dealing with the anxiety and stress in their lives that often appears to be anger or irritability.  He believes that as adults we begin to parent ourselves by taking responsibility for our lives and choices instead of blaming our spouses, our bosses, or our parents.

He has also enjoyed working with teenagers for over two decades as a teacher, coach and therapist.  He enjoys helping teens learn to navigate the new adult world that is opening up in front of them. He incorporates individual therapy with teens as well as family therapy in helping those same teens and parents communicate.

Finally, Lonnie reserves a portion of his practice to work with couples on improving, revitalizing, and salvaging their marriages.  He blends his clinical training with his sense of humor and personality to create a healthy environment for couple's therapy. In couples therapy, he creates a safe space for you to practice hearing, accepting, and allowing your spouse to influence you.

His Education and Experience:

Lonnie has an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of Akron as well as a Masters of Arts in Education from the same institution.  In addition, he received his Masters of Arts in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2005.  Since that time he has worked with teenagers in a private residential setting, adults in a community mental health center, and finally with teens and adults in his own private practice Clear Creek Counseling.

His Theory and Approach:

My clinical training has been grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, and Logotherapy.  In addition, I have training and practice Emotionally Focused Couple's Therapy, The Gottman Method,  Motivational Interviewing, and have been influenced by David Schnarch's Passionate Marriage teaching.

My personal faith as a practicing Christian informs my firm belief in the dignity and value of all human beings and this motivates my practice.   As a licensed therapist, I respect the rights of all my clients to hold to their own beliefs and values; as to Christians, I can offer an integrated approach which blends my clinical expertise with my understanding of Christian beliefs and Scriptures.
