Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Charlotte
A significant mental health concern for couples and families in the Charlotte area is substance abuse and chemical dependency. Nearly 40 percent of teenagers in the area have used drugs or alcohol at some point in their life, and the same percentage have consumed significant amounts of alcohol by the end of their eighth grade year.2 Regardless of the person involved in substance abuse, the entire family is negatively impacted by their behavior, especially if it is a parent that is struggling with this issue.
Students in the Master of Arts program in Counseling at Pfeiffer University have an opportunity to get field experience by interning at the Pfeiffer Institute of Marriage and Family Therapy. The Institute is a community-based provider of mental health care for individuals, couples, and families who need help navigating life's circumstances. Graduate clinicians employ a variety of therapeutic techniques to help families identify negative patterns of thinking and unhealthy behaviors. Clinicians work under the direction of licensed therapists who specialize in the marriage and family therapy field. Family Services and Assistance Programs
The Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services Division of Youth and Family Services is responsible for providing programs and information that protect Charlotte-area children and strengthen families. Youth and Family Services receives referrals from other agencies, conducts investigations into allegations of neglect, provides family interventions for families who have or are currently struggling with negative situations, and many more services to train, educate, and advocate on behalf of children and families.
