As a former teacher, school counselor and preschool director, I have a history of working with young children. Communicating with children and providing play therapy in my office is a standard practice of mine. I enjoy allowing children to experience themselves through Gestalt, Art, and Sand Tray. Because children do not possess the language adults do to express themselves, play is the natural way they communicate. Children are able to work through their fears and anxieties in a safe, nurturing environment.

Children typically communicate their emotions through their behavior. Young children don't usually have the verbal skills to describe their feelings, so its key to help them figure out ways to communicate what's going on "inside." I use play therapy, especially art and storytelling, to help children deal with stressors. I also believe parents are key in dealing with children's issues, and because of that I require considerable parent involvement in therapy. Often parents will be the ones who come to regular sessions in order to learn skills for dealing with specific issues their child is experiencing. Other times family sessions involving both the child and parents is optimal.

My work with child includes parent involvement. I help them understand what their child is feeling, struggling with, and how they are expressing it through their behavior, since they do not have yet have the words to express what they're experiencing. While the child needs a safe place to express him/herself, parents also need guidance and direction in understanding the uniqueness of their child, and effective ways to respond to them. I also work with children going through major changes, such as a new sibling, re-marriages and blending families, adoptions, parents going back to work or changing schedules or jobs, moves, and high conflict divorce and custody disputes.
